Job description

The Apple Card & Savings team is building the financial products that put users in control of their money - at a scale that demands both technical excellence and thoughtful leadership. As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of talented engineers delivering the backend systems that power Apple Card and Apple Savings, helping shape how millions of people experience financial services every day. Description
You will manage a team of engineers building and scaling the distributed systems that underpin Apple Card and Apple Savings - spanning Java and Kotlin services, infrastructure, relational and NoSQL datastores, and high-throughput messaging pipelines. Day-to-day, you will balance hands-on technical leadership with cross-functional collaboration, ensuring the team delivers high-quality software that meets the performance and reliability bar Apple's customers expect. You will partner closely with product, design, and partner engineering teams to define roadmaps, resolve ambiguity, and grow your engineers.","responsibilities":"Lead, mentor, and grow a team of backend engineers working on Apple Card and Apple Savings features and infrastructure.
Drive architectural decisions across distributed systems, ensuring solutions meet scale, performance, and reliability requirements.
Establish engineering best practices around code quality, testing, and operational excellence to support high-stakes financial products.
Partner with product managers, operations, and cross-functional engineering teams to define technical roadmaps and deliver against them.
Translate complex business and regulatory requirements into clear, achievable engineering plans.
Champion a culture of quality - setting high standards for design reviews, code reviews, and incident response organizations.
Communicate technical strategy, team progress, and risks clearly to senior leadership and partner.
Recruit, onboard, and retain engineering talent to scale the team effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with financial services, payments, or fintech domains, including regulatory and compliance considerations.
Hands-on experience with performance engineering, capacity planning, and large-scale system reliability practices.
Proficiency in modern CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and cloud-native deployment patterns.
Skilled in defining and tracking engineering health metrics - latency, throughput, error rates, and on-call burden.
Experience working in organizations with high data-privacy and security requirements.
Background building consumer-facing financial or commerce products at scale.
Minimum Qualifications
10+ years of software engineering experience building and operating large-scale distributed backend systems environment.
Proven experience managing and growing a team of software engineers in a fast-paced product.
Deep expertise in Java or Kotlin, with hands-on experience designing services for scale and performance.
Strong background in cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, and API design.
Experience with relational and NoSQL databases and high-throughput messaging systems (e.g., Kafka, SQS, or equivalent).
Demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional collaboration with stakeholders.
Track record of delivering high-quality software on time in ambiguous, rapidly evolving environments.
Exceptional communication skills - able to convey technical complexity clearly to both engineering teams, partners and executive stakeholders.
Pay & Benefits
At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $206,200 and $356,400, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You'll also receive benefits including: Comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, a range of discounted products and free services, and for formal education related to advancing your career at Apple, reimbursement for certain educational expenses - including tuition.
