Job description

Protection & Control Field Services Technician

4P Consulting Inc. is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Protection & Control (P&C) Field Services Technician to join our team in Forest Park, GA. The ideal candidate will be responsible for commissioning, testing, maintaining, and troubleshooting protective relaying, control systems, and communication equipment associated with substation and transmission power lines. This position offers hands-on field experience, and the successful candidate will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the completion of projects safely, efficiently, and within schedule.

Job Responsibilities

  • Commissioning and Maintenance: Commission, test, maintain, and troubleshoot protective relays, control systems, and communication equipment associated with substations and transmission power lines.
  • Project Coordination: Manage construction projects and substation routines, ensuring timely completion with no service interruptions. Manage clearances effectively to meet quality, schedule, and budget targets.
  • Outage Coordination: Coordinate substation outages and commissioning activities with multiple internal and external stakeholders. Respond to trouble calls as needed.
  • Safety and Quality: Develop and apply safe work practices to prevent safety and operational incidents. Follow formal written requirements and conduct job briefings to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Technical Expertise: Develop and share knowledge in 3-phase power, relaying, SCADA, and substation testing techniques with team members and stakeholders.
  • Emergency Response: Isolate hazards and damaged equipment during emergencies to restore service safely and efficiently.

Job Requirements

Education Requirements:

  • 4-year Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or
  • 4-year BS Degree in Engineering Technology, or
  • 2-year technical degree in electrical maintenance, or
  • Equivalent applicable experience (e.g., substation electrician, technician, wireman, electrician).

Experience:

  • Protection & Control (P&C) Field Services experience preferred.
  • Electric power utility transmission construction, maintenance, or operations experience.
  • Related substation experience (P&C applications, design, construction, major equipment, project management).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of 3-phase power systems, AC/DC Protection & Control schemes, and fault analysis.
  • Familiarity with test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, communication instruments, and computerized relay test sets.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to manage projects with multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills across multiple work groups, including customers, employees, and leadership.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting with a strong customer and quality focus.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to participate in callout rotation and respond to outages or abnormal conditions outside normal work hours.
  • Overnight travel may be required.
  • Safety-sensitive position subject to relevant pre-employment screening(s) (background check, drug screen, NERC Background check).
  • Ability to work in a substation environment and perform physical duties, including operating manual switches.
  • Must reside within a reasonable distance from the office or be willing to relocate.
