Job description

This position is 40 hours per week, $35.50 per hour. Shift: Sunday - Saturday (may include overnights + rotating routes)
The CDL A Transfer/Flex Driver is an on-the-road driving role responsible for the safe and timely transportation of research products, animals, biological materials, and related cargo between company facilities and customer locations. This role provides flexible transportation support for route coverage, special assignments, and operational needs while ensuring compliance with DOT regulations, company policies, animal welfare standards, and biosecurity procedures. The driver represents the company in a professional, safe, and courteous manner while supporting customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
Key Accountabilities
  • Safely operate commercial vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) exceeding 26,000 pounds in accordance with DOT regulations and company policies.
  • Shift: Sunday - Saturday (may include overnights + rotating routes) Full time position (40 hours guaranteed)
  • Provide transfer and flexible route coverage for scheduled routes, vacations, absences, special runs, and changing operational demands.
  • Pick up, verify, transport, and deliver loads accurately and on schedule.
  • Accurately complete transportation, inspection, delivery, and regulatory paperwork.
  • Safely load and unload various types of cargo, including touch freight as required.
  • Drive safely in varying road, traffic, and weather conditions, including heavy traffic and inclement weather.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and perform basic vehicle maintenance activities as appropriate.
  • Follow assigned schedules and DOT hours-of-service requirements, including overnight travel and extended driving assignments as needed.
  • Utilize maps, GPS systems, and routing instructions to navigate efficiently.
  • Provide professional and courteous customer service at all company and customer locations.
  • Work safely and effectively with research animals and related biological materials when applicable.
  • Maintain compliance with company safety, animal welfare, transportation, and biosecurity procedures.
  • Must be willing to travel to other sites across the country for weeks at a time, maximum of 3 weeks or less.
  • Must be comfortable driving a variety of vehicle types from Class A 53' Reefer Tractor/Trailer to Class C Reefer Vans and everything in between.
  • Must be willing to Team drive when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
  • Valid CDL Class A license with a clean driving record.
  • Minimum of 5 years of CDL driving experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of a motor vehicle driving record check.
  • Ability to safely lift, move, push, or pull up to 70 pounds repeatedly.
  • Ability to safely drive for extended periods of time.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and compliance.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and communicate effectively in English.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Working knowledge of roads, traffic laws, DOT regulations, and safe transportation practices.
  • Ability to read maps, use GPS systems, and follow routing instructions.
  • Self-motivated, dependable, and adaptable to changing schedules and operational needs.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including overnight travel and extended routes as needed.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • Extended periods of sitting, driving, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and loading/unloading freight.
  • Frequent entering and exiting of delivery vehicles.
  • Ability to safely lift and transport materials weighing up to 70 pounds.
  • Exposure to varying weather, road, and traffic conditions.
  • Exposure to animals, animal-related materials, odors, noise, and biohazards.
  • Ability to work safely with animals of varying sizes, including non-human primates.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and complete transportation and regulatory documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, management, and team members.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as applicable.

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person's relevant experience and/or education level.
