Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking an Underwriting Assistant to join our growing Middle Market Property team. This role supports the underwriting process for both new business and renewal accounts by coordinating submissions, maintaining underwriting documentation, assisting with account analysis, and providing exceptional service to brokers and internal stakeholders.
This is an excellent opportunity for an organized, detail-oriented insurance professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment and is interested in building a long-term career in commercial property underwriting. The role offers exposure to Middle Market Property business, broker interactions, and underwriting decision-making processes while working alongside an experienced team.
Location: Hybrid out of either the Melville, NY or New York City office.

What will your job entail?

Job Responsibilities

  • Support the underwriting team in managing Middle Market Property new business and renewal accounts.

  • Coordinate underwriting activities including submissions, quotes, binds, policy issuance, endorsements, and renewals.

  • Review submissions and gather necessary underwriting information to ensure complete and accurate account documentation.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date underwriting records, policy files, and account information within company systems.

  • Assist with renewal preparation, including gathering information, preparing documentation, and communicating with brokers.

  • Communicate with brokers, agents, clients, and internal stakeholders to obtain additional information, answer inquiries, and assist with account servicing needs.

  • Review account documentation for completeness and assist underwriters with risk analysis and account evaluation.

  • Monitor underwriting workflows and follow up on outstanding items to support timely service and file completion.

  • Ensure underwriting activities comply with company guidelines, regulatory requirements, and documentation standards.

  • Assist with audits, reporting activities, and other administrative underwriting functions.

  • Deliver responsive customer service and help maintain strong broker relationships that contribute to team success.

  • Stay informed on underwriting procedures, property insurance products, and market trends to support continued professional development.

Required Qualifications

  • 1+ years of experience in insurance, underwriting support, account management, policy administration, customer service, or a related role.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to build productive relationships with brokers, clients, and internal business partners.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn insurance systems and underwriting platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting commercial Property insurance business.

  • Exposure to underwriting, renewals, policy issuance, endorsements, or insurance operations.

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Insurance, Finance, or a related field.

  • Active Property & Casualty license or ability to obtain as required.

  • Interest in pursuing a long-term career within commercial underwriting.
