Commanders Intern information

What is a Commanders intern?

A Commanders Intern is an individual who works with the Washington Commanders, a professional football team, in a temporary, entry-level position to gain hands-on experience in sports management, operations, marketing, or other related fields. Interns assist with various projects, support staff during events, and learn about the daily workings of an NFL organization. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in sports administration. Internships may be offered in departments such as communications, community relations, finance, or player personnel. Interns are expected to be proactive, flexible, and passionate about sports.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Commanders intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Commanders Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects that support both the coaching staff and team operations. Typical responsibilities include assisting with practice preparations, compiling and analyzing data on team performance, helping organize team events, and supporting administrative tasks. You may also collaborate with different departments, such as marketing or community relations, offering a well-rounded view of how a professional sports organization functions. This hands-on experience helps interns build valuable industry knowledge and connections, which can be beneficial for future roles in sports management or coaching.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Commanders intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commanders Intern, you generally need a background in sports management, business, or a related field, along with strong organizational and analytical skills. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, ticketing platforms, and social media management tools is usually expected. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and adaptability help you stand out in supporting diverse team initiatives and fast-paced environments. These skills are important because they ensure smooth operations, effective teamwork, and valuable contributions to the organization's goals.

Job Description

What is SkillBridge?

The DOW SkillBridge program is an opportunity for service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the last 180 days of service. DOW SkillBridge connects transitioning service members with industry partners in real-world job experiences.

For service members, DOW SkillBridge provides an invaluable chance to work and learn in civilian career areas. For industry partners, DOW SkillBridge is an opportunity to access and leverage the world's most highly trained and motivated workforce at no cost. Service members participating in DOW SkillBridge programs continue receiving their military compensation and benefits, while industry partners provide the civilian training and work experience.

Installation and unit commanders who have members about to transition from active duty, bridge the gap between their service members' end of service and the beginning of their civilian careers with the DOW SkillBridge participation. Commanders ease this military-to-civilian transition period for their members when they permit SkillBridge participation with trusted employers.

Service members can be granted up to 180 days of permissive duty to focus solely on training full-time with approved industry partners after their chain of command, field grade commander, provides written authorization and approval. These industry partners offer real-world training and in-demand work experience while having the opportunity to evaluate the service member's suitability for future employment.
