What is a Comic job?

A Comic job typically involves creating and performing humorous content for entertainment. This can include stand-up comedy, writing for television or web series, or producing comic strips and graphic novels. Comics use wit, storytelling, and observational humor to engage audiences. They often perform live, write jokes, or collaborate on comedic projects. Success in this field requires creativity, persistence, and a strong sense of timing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Comic position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Comic, you need strong comedic timing, original material, and stage presence, often honed through live performance experience and workshops. Familiarity with audio/visual equipment for stage shows and basic video editing tools for online content is beneficial. Creativity, resilience, and excellent communication skills help comics connect with diverse audiences and handle feedback or challenging crowds. These abilities are crucial for building a loyal following, adapting to different venues, and sustaining a career in the competitive entertainment industry.

What are the typical work settings and schedules for comics?

Comics often perform in a variety of settings such as comedy clubs, theaters, festivals, private events, and increasingly, online platforms. Work schedules can be highly variable, with most performances taking place evenings and weekends, and significant travel may be required for gigs or tours. Many comics also spend considerable time writing material, attending open mics, networking, and promoting themselves on social media. Working as a comic is generally independent, but collaboration can occur during group shows, writing workshops, or through agents and managers. Adaptability and self-motivation are important due to the freelance nature and irregular hours typical of this career.

Job description

Comic Relief uses the power of comedy to fight childhood poverty. We do this by changing the stories that keep childhood poverty invisible and misunderstood, engaging people and communities to take action, and resourcing local nonprofits doing the work on the ground. To date, we've helped more than 50 million children and families live healthier, safer, and more empowered lives.

LOCATION

Candidates should be based in the NY metro area. We are a hybrid organization and work three days per week in our downtown New York City office.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a Director of Marketing to lead the strategy and execution that brings this mission to more people.

This is a senior, hands-on role responsible for building awareness, growing audiences, and driving engagement and fundraising across campaigns, content, live comedy events, and local activations.

Reporting to the Chief Creative Officer, the Director of Marketing will translate Comic Reliefโ€™s impact strategy into a clear, cohesive marketing engineโ€”one that harnesses comedy, culture, and creativity to reach new audiences and mobilize them in the fight against childhood poverty.

This role requires someone who can operate across the full spectrum โ€” from setting strategy to hands-on execution โ€” with experience spanning commercial entertainment marketing and nonprofit or advocacy-driven work.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Marketing Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and own Comic Reliefโ€™s integrated marketing strategy across awareness, fundraising, and event-driven campaigns

  • Align marketing priorities with organizational goals, impact strategy, and creative direction

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the CCO, helping shape how Comic Relief shows up in culture and communicates its mission, i.e., brand, content, and communications work.

Campaigns, Media & Growth

  • Lead media strategy, planning, and execution across paid, owned, and pro bono channels

  • Manage donated media and in-kind support, working closely with the Comic Relief partnership team, external partners, and agencies

  • Drive new donor acquisition, public ticket sales and attendance for events, issue awareness and education, and audience growth

  • Manage the trafficking, placement, and optimization of creative assets across paid, owned, and pro bono media channels

  • Oversee media agencies and vendors, ensuring strong performance and accountability

  • Partner within the department and across the organization to ensure goals are met and campaigns are delivered efficiently and effectively

Execution & Management

  • Oversee day-to-day implementation of campaigns, ensuring timelines, budgets, and deliverables stay on track

  • Partner closely within the creative team, across the organization, and with external partners to deliver cohesive, high-impact work

  • Build approaches and processes that enable smart testing, learning, and iteration

  • Build and manage the marketing and communications calendar

  • Build and manage campaigns, including placing and managing media, and crafting communications

Measurement & Optimization

  • Define success metrics across awareness, engagement, fundraising, and conversion

  • Implement campaign tracking and reporting

  • Analyze performance and translate insights into actionable improvements

  • Ensure marketing decisions are data-informed without losing sight of cultural relevance and creative impact

Who You Are

  • A strategic marketer who can also roll up their sleeves and execute

  • Equally comfortable building a long-term growth plan and troubleshooting a live campaign in real time

  • Experienced in entertainment or consumer-facing marketing, with a strong understanding of how culture, talent, and content drive attention

  • Experienced in nonprofit, advocacy, or mission-driven marketing, with sensitivity to tone, trust, and impact

  • Fluent in media strategy, agency management, and performance measurement

  • Collaborative, decisive, and comfortable operating in a fast-moving, creative environment

Ideal Background

  • 8โ€“12+ years of marketing experience, with leadership responsibility

  • Experience spanning entertainment marketing (film, TV, comedy, music, live events, or consumer brands) and social impact or advocacy work

  • Proven success driving awareness, engagement, and conversion at scale

  • Deep fluency in paid media platforms, including hands-on experience with social and digital ad managers (Meta, Google, TikTok, YouTube, The Trade Desk and similar platforms)

  • Experience using marketing automation such as HubSpot Marketing Studio, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, or comparable platforms to manage campaigns, audiences, and performance

  • Strong command of performance measurement, attribution, and optimization across the funnel

  • Experience managing agencies, partnerships, and complex stakeholder ecosystems

Why This Role Matters

This is not a traditional nonprofit marketing role. The Director of Marketing will help define and deliver a new impact modelโ€”one that harnesses the full power of comedy, culture, and capital to tackle childhood poverty.

Youโ€™ll be building the marketing engine behind that ambition.

This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee. They will be required to follow any other instructions and perform any other duties requested by their manager.
