What is the difference between Color Coordinator vs Color Consultant?

AspectColor CoordinatorColor Consultant
CredentialsTypically high school diploma or equivalent; some certifications in design or color theoryOften holds certifications in color consulting or design, with more specialized training
Work EnvironmentRetail stores, interior design projects, event planningInterior design firms, consulting agencies, independent consulting
Industry UsageUsed by retailers, decorators, and event plannersEngaged by clients seeking expert advice on color schemes and branding

While both roles involve working with colors, a Color Coordinator primarily manages color schemes within specific projects or retail environments, focusing on implementation. A Color Consultant offers expert advice, often providing personalized recommendations for interior design, branding, or personal styling. The roles overlap in industry and credentials but differ in scope and client engagement.

What is a color coordinator?

A Color Coordinator is a professional who selects, organizes, and manages color schemes for various projects, often in industries like fashion, interior design, marketing, or manufacturing. They ensure that color choices align with branding, design goals, and client preferences. Their work involves understanding color theory, current trends, and the psychological impact of colors to create visually appealing and effective results. Color Coordinators may collaborate with designers, clients, and production teams to achieve cohesive outcomes. This role requires creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills.

How does a color coordinator typically collaborate with design and production teams during a project?

A Color Coordinator works closely with both design and production teams to ensure color consistency and accuracy throughout a project. This involves attending design meetings, reviewing color samples, providing feedback on palettes, and communicating any adjustments needed for materials or finishes. The role often acts as a bridge between creative vision and manufacturing limitations, requiring clear communication and attention to detail. Regular collaboration helps maintain brand standards and ensures that the final product meets aesthetic and quality expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a color coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Color Coordinator, you need a strong understanding of color theory, design principles, and often a degree in design, art, or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and color matching systems like Pantone is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and creativity are vital soft skills for effectively collaborating with clients and design teams. These skills ensure cohesive color schemes, client satisfaction, and successful project outcomes in industries like fashion, interior design, or manufacturing.

Job description

Engineering data centers with precision and expertise.
At Strategic Mission Critical, we are more than just engineers; we are experts focusing solely on mission critical facilities. Our seasoned leadership team brings together decades of experience, equipping data center providers worldwide with robust, reliable solutions that keep pace with the evolving digital landscape.
As demand for high-performance infrastructure accelerates - fueled by AI and the expanding digital landscape - SMC continues to lead through technical rigor and operational excellence. We're seeking leaders who think beyond projects to improve the way we deliver them: individuals who elevate people, process, and performance across the firm.
We're looking for a BIM Coordinator to support multidisciplinary BIM coordination, Revit modeling, QA/QC, and model management efforts across mission critical projects.
This role is ideal for someone early in their BIM career who has a strong foundation in Revit and wants to continue developing within a design-focused BIM environment.
You'll work closely with engineering teams to support coordinated, organized, and healthy model environments across multiple disciplines throughout the project lifecycle.
This is a collaborative, hands-on role with strong exposure to Revit workflows, BIM standards, coordination processes, and large-scale project environments.
Responsibilities
  • Support Revit modeling and model maintenance efforts across mission critical projects
  • Work within collaborative model environments with multiple linked disciplines
  • Partner closely with MEP engineering teams to support coordination and project execution
  • Assist with model QA/QC reviews to help maintain model health, organization, and consistency
  • Support coordination workflows and assist with basic clash detection/resolution efforts
  • Help maintain BIM standards, templates, and internal workflows
  • Assist with project setup, views, sheets, and model organization aligned with project requirements
  • Utilize Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) on a daily basis
  • Support construction documentation and coordination workflows throughout project phases
  • Collaborate with internal teams to resolve coordination/model issues and support project deadlines

Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience in BIM, CAD, or related modeling/coordinator roles
  • Hands-on experience with Autodesk Revit in a professional environment
  • Exposure to MEP modeling and multidisciplinary coordination workflows
  • Experience working within collaborative model environments with linked models
  • Familiarity with BIM standards, model organization, and coordination processes
  • Familiarity with construction drawings and design documentation
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills within team environments

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC)
  • Exposure to Navisworks or clash detection workflows
  • Experience working on large-scale or mission critical projects (data centers a plus)
  • Background in consulting engineering or design environments
  • Exposure to BIM standards development, templates, or family management
  • Revit certification or formal Autodesk training preferred

Compensation
Base Compensation: $65,000 - $90,000 (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to factors such as education, experience, skills and/or location)
SMC offers a competitive benefits package, with a 36-hour standard work week, hybrid working arrangement, 13 paid holidays, 100% coverage of medical, health, and dental insurance premiums for our full-time employees, and reimbursement of professional licensing costs. Spouse and family insurance premiums are subsidized by SMC. All full-time employees are additionally eligible for employer-sponsored life and long-term disability insurance as well as participation in our 401(k) plan, with annual safe harbor contribution.
We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, age, national origin, disability status, genetic information, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
