Color Chemist information

What is a color chemist?

Color Chemists are specialized scientists who study, develop, and apply colorants such as dyes and pigments in various products. They work in industries like textiles, paints, plastics, cosmetics, and food to ensure colors are vibrant, stable, and safe. Their work involves chemical analysis, formulation, and testing to achieve desired visual effects and meet regulatory standards. Color Chemists often collaborate with product designers and engineers to create new colors or improve existing ones.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a color chemist?

To thrive as a Color Chemist, you need a solid background in chemistry, color science, and analytical techniques, usually supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in chemistry or a related field. Familiarity with spectrophotometers, color matching software, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are critical soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and delivering precise results. These skills and qualifications are essential to consistently develop accurate, high-quality color formulations that meet industry and client standards.

How does a color chemist collaborate with product development and quality assurance teams?

Color Chemists play a critical role in cross-functional teams by working closely with product development to formulate colors that meet design specifications and performance requirements. They also coordinate with quality assurance to ensure that color consistency and stability are maintained throughout production batches. Frequent communication, sample testing, and troubleshooting are essential parts of this collaboration, ensuring that products achieve both aesthetic appeal and compliance with industry standards.

What is the difference between Color Chemist vs Color Technologist?

Common Search/ComparisonColor Chemist vs Color Technologist

While both roles involve working with colors and require similar educational backgrounds, a Color Chemist primarily focuses on developing and synthesizing new color compounds, whereas a Color Technologist applies existing color formulations in production and quality control. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers identify the right career path or job opportunity in the color industry.

Production Chemist II

Role overview

The Chemist II is responsible for executing air-sensitive chemical manufacturing processes with a primary focus on the preparation, purification, and filling of customer-ready chemical containers and canisters. This role requires hands-on experience with inert atmosphere chemistry, reactor operations, and analytical testing to ensure safe, compliant, and high-quality production in a regulated chemical manufacturing environment.

The Chemist II operates independently on routine production activities and supports continuous improvement, documentation, and safety initiatives.

Key deliverables for this role

  • Perform air-sensitive chemical reactions, purifications, distillations, filtrations, and extractions using glassware and reactor systems (up to ~72L).
  • Prepare, transfer, and fill customer containers and canisters with air-sensitive chemical products (solids, liquids, and gases).
  • Charge solids, liquids, and gases into reactor systems and monitor reaction progress.
  • Accurately document all work in batch records, MPRs, logs, and lab notebooks in accordance with GDP.
  • Label all reactions, products, and waste materials per SOPs and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in audits, investigations, and quality improvement activities.
  • Follow all safety procedures, identify hazards, and report unsafe conditions.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of chemical waste and by-products.
  • Participate in safety meetings and incident investigations.
  • Perform routine equipment and preventive maintenance (e.g., pumps, stirrers, heat transfer systems).
  • Troubleshoot basic equipment issues and support corrective actions.
  • Maintain inventory of chemicals, consumables, and production supplies.

Traits of a strong candidate

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field, or High School Diploma with 5+ years of industrial chemical manufacturing experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in chemical manufacturing or production.
  • Demonstrated experience with:
  • Inert atmosphere techniques (glovebox or Schlenk line)
  • Transferring air-sensitive reagents (solid, liquid, gas)
  • Air-sensitive distillations
  • Reactor and glassware systems
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and basic equipment troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with hazardous materials packaging and customer-ready chemical filling operations (preferred).
  • Experience in regulated or quality-driven manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with chemical scale-up or process development is a plus.

Location: Saukville, WI and Sheboygan Falls, WI
