What does a collegiate recovery program coordinator do?

A Collegiate Recovery Program Coordinator oversees and manages support programs for college students in recovery from substance use disorders. They develop and implement services such as peer support groups, educational workshops, and sober social events. Coordinators also advocate for students' needs, collaborate with campus departments, and provide resources or referrals to ensure a safe and supportive environment for recovery. Their goal is to help students maintain their recovery while succeeding academically and socially.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a collegiate recovery program coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Collegiate Recovery Program Coordinator, you generally need a background in counseling, addiction recovery, or higher education, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with student support management systems, program evaluation tools, and certifications such as Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) or Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) are often valuable. Exceptional interpersonal skills, cultural competency, and the ability to foster a supportive and inclusive environment are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure effective program delivery, student engagement, and the creation of a safe, empowering community for students in recovery.

Building strong relationships with students and collaborating with faculty and staff are essential for creating a supportive network that encourages sustained recovery.
