Job description

The Baltimore Sun, Maryland’s leading news organization since 1837, is seeking a digital-first Sports Editor to lead coverage focused on exclusive insight, accountability journalism, and authoritative local reporting.

We are looking for an editor who will push coverage beyond the game story and deliver the reporting, analysis, and perspective that readers can’t get anywhere else.

From the Ravens and Orioles to college, high school, and youth sports, this editor will lead coverage that explains not just what happened, but why it matters.

The Sun is investing in journalism that stands out, seeking those who create content that is essential, insightful and impossible to replicate. This is an opportunity to lead a sports report that goes deeper and delivers more value to readers than anyone else.

Essential Functions
  • Set the vision and lead daily coverage with urgency and strong news judgment, ensuring fast, competitive execution across digital platforms.
  • Drive beyond-the-game journalism by prioritizing analysis, enterprise and reporting that delivers insight, context and what comes next.
  • Lead accountability reporting in sports, examining money, power, public funding and decision-making involving teams, leagues and institutions.
  • Own SEO and audience strategy, including headline writing, search optimization and digital packaging to maximize reach and impact.
  • Build must-read local coverage across pro, college and high school sports, with a focus on stories that resonate with readers.
  • Develop and lead a high-performing team, coaching reporters and assistant editors to produce deeper reporting, stronger sourcing and more authoritative storytelling.
  • Collaborate across the newsroom to elevate major stories and ensure strong execution across digital, print and eNewspaper platforms.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • 5+ years of editing experience, including leadership in sports or a related area
  • Proven ability to produce enterprise, analytical and accountability journalism
  • Strong understanding of SEO, digital growth and real-time coverage
  • Excellent news judgment, leadership and communication skills
  • Knowledge of Baltimore sports and the regional landscape is a plus
Salary Range: $80,000 - $90,000

Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors, including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
