Tetra Tech SWW is looking for an on-call field data collector to support our Diamond Bar, California office.  The position offers opportunities to work within a large international firm on many exciting projects with an environmental focus. Our business unit focuses primarily on strategic planning, design, construction, permitting, regulatory compliance, and program implementation for solid waste management programs and projects.  This position will provide opportunities to work on projects that focus on waste reduction, reuse and reduction planning, circularity and sustainability in waste management, alternative technologies to landfilling, green renewable energy projects, food waste prevention and reduction, waste characterization, and solid waste facility and collection program development.  The successful candidate will become part of a team that will execute projects locally and internationally that make a difference in the communities served and the environment.

Tetra Tech is looking to hire an on-call field data collector to assist with waste characterization (sorting) studies locally in Los Angeles County. The pay scale for this position is $25-$28 an hour, based on qualifications and experience. 

Your Role:

  • Collecting waste samples at a solid waste facility or at the point of generation
  • Sorting through waste and categorizing the material into specific categories
  • Conducting visual assessments of waste samples
  • Weighing each sorted sample and recording the sample data and photos into a laptop/tablet
  • Set up, tear down, and cleanup of sorting area, including tables, scales, canopies, and other sorting equipment

Qualifications:

  • Ability to walk for multiple hours and work outdoors in variable weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Ability to exercise flexibility, good judgment, and discretion
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to operate a tablet
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record 
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience specific to waste reduction and recycling is a plus
  • Ability and willingness to perform visual inspections and characterization of trash
  • Experience with solid waste planning including waste characterization, landfill diversion planning, and food waste prevention programs is a plus
  • Urban Planning, Sustainability, Environmental Science, or a related degree from a 4-year university is required
