Job description

What You Will Do

Crew members perform the hands-on work required to install PrairieTech's landscape and ecological restoration projects.

Site preparation: Dig, grade, rake, remove debris, prepare planting areas, and complete other tasks needed to get sites ready for installation.

Native planting: Plant native trees, shrubs, grasses, sedges, and wildflowers according to project plans and proper planting practices.

Landscape installation: Install mulch, stone, edging, boulders, pavers, and other landscape elements, and assist with hardscapes, irrigation, lighting, and prairie establishment as needed.

Materials and equipment: Load and move plants, soil, stone, tools, and other materials, and safely operate hand tools, power tools, trucks, skid steers, trenchers, and sod cutters after appropriate training.

Project care and cleanup: Water, prune, and protect new landscapes while keeping tools, vehicles, materials, and worksites clean and organized.


Schedule, Season, and Location

Work season: Approximately April 1 through November 1.

Typical schedule: Monday through Friday, approximately 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., generally 40-55 hours per week.

Overtime: Hours beyond 40 may be required during busy periods and are paid in accordance with applicable wage laws.

Location: Projects are located throughout Dane County and surrounding areas. Employees must have reliable transportation to each day's assigned meeting location or jobsite.


What We Are Looking For

Dependability and teamwork: Arrive on time, communicate clearly, follow directions, ask questions, and work respectfully with crew members and clients.

Strong work habits: Take pride in the details and work efficiently without sacrificing safety or quality.

Physical readiness: Be comfortable performing demanding outdoor work that includes frequent lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, walking, digging, and repetitive tasks.

Willingness to learn: Previous experience is helpful, but we value curiosity, coachability, and genuine interest in improving your skills.

Relevant work: Previous experience in landscaping, ecological restoration, construction, farming, nursery work, or another physically demanding outdoor role.

Helpful skills: Experience operating a skid steer or similar equipment, along with knowledge of Wisconsin native plants or invasive species, is greatly preferred but not required.

Driving: A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record are preferred and may be required for employees assigned to operate company vehicles.


Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily outdoors in conditions that may include heat, cold, rain, wind, mud, dust, and uneven terrain. The role requires lifting and carrying more than 50 pounds and performing physical work for extended periods.

Some projects may involve working around herbicides, fertilizers, noise, and powered equipment. Employees must follow all safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
