Will a medical coder be replaced by AI?
What is the highest paid coding job?
What is the difference between Coding Siu vs Coding Technician?
| Aspect | Coding Siu | Coding Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Certification in coding standards, possibly a diploma or certificate in medical coding | Certification in coding or health information technology, often a diploma or associate degree |
| Work Environment | Healthcare facilities, clinics, hospitals | Medical offices, hospitals, outpatient clinics |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used by healthcare providers for billing and record-keeping | Employed in healthcare settings for coding and documentation |
| Common Search & Comparison | Often compared for roles in medical coding and billing | Related but more technical, focusing on coding accuracy |
Both Coding Siu and Coding Technician roles involve medical coding, but Coding Siu typically emphasizes billing and insurance claims, while Coding Technicians focus more on accurate medical record coding. Job description
- Communicate regularly with Engagement Managers (Directors), project team members, and representatives from various functional and / or technical teams, including escalating any matters that require additional attention and consideration from engagement management
- Design, build, and support Epic Bridges interfaces connecting Epic to third-party systems (labs, radiology, pharmacy, HIEs, devices, revenue cycle partners, public health).
- Develop and maintain InterSystems Health Connect productions (business services, business processes, business operations) to route, orchestrate, and transform data.
- Build and troubleshoot common HL7 v2 interface patterns (as applicable): ADT, ORM, ORU, SIU, DFT-including triggers, acknowledgements (ACK), error handling, retries, and reprocessing.
- Create and maintain data mappings/transformations (e.g., HealthConnect DTL), and implement code-based logic when configuration alone is insufficient.
- Configure integration connectivity and protocols (as applicable): MLLP/TCP, file/SFTP, web services/APIs; manage certificates/secure transport where required.
- Perform end-to-end testing (unit/integrated/regression/cutover), validate message content and downstream behavior, and support go-lives.
- Monitor interface health: queues, message traceability, alerts, dashboards; create and maintain runbooks/SOPs and operational documentation.
- Lead/participate in incident triage and root-cause analysis (RCA) across upstream/downstream systems; implement fixes and preventive controls.
- Follow change control and release management practices: environment promotions, documentation, peer review, and coordinated cutovers.
- Collaborate with Epic application teams, integration platform teams, infrastructure/network/security, and vendors to deliver stable integration outcomes.
- Ensure alignment with privacy/security/compliance expectations (HIPAA-aware handling, least privilege access, auditability).
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related IT discipline; or equivalent experience
- Epic Bridges certification (current/active, per organization requirements).
- Strong hands-on experience with InterSystems HealthConnect development and production support.
- Strong knowledge of HL7 v2.x structure and operations (segments/fields, ACK workflows, message troubleshooting).
- Experience in delivering and supporting interfaces in production (including on-call or time-sensitive support).
- Ability to produce clear integration documentation (interface specs, mapping documents, support runbooks).
- Hands-on experience with Git for version control, deployment orchestration, and code collaboration (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket)
- Limited immigration sponsorship may be available
- Ability to travel 10%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve
- On-call/support rotation (as needed)
- Off-hours cutovers during releases/go-lives
- Experience with FHIR and API-based integration patterns (REST, OAuth2) in healthcare settings.
- Experience with an additional interface engine or tooling (e.g., Cloverleaf, Rhapsody, Mirth/NextGen Connect, InterSystems IRIS for Health interoperability features).
- Knowledge of X12 (claims/EDI) for revenue cycle integrations and/or other healthcare standards (e.g., C-CDA, DICOM) depending on domain.
- Prior Epic implementation/upgrade/go-live experience and strong stakeholder management in complex clinical environments.
