Coding Engineer information

Is 27 too late to start coding?

Coding engineers can start at any age, including 27, as programming skills are learned through practice and education. Many successful developers began coding in their late twenties or later, and acquiring skills in programming languages, algorithms, and tools can lead to a career change or advancement regardless of age.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior software engineers, especially those with expertise in high-demand areas like machine learning, cloud computing, or cybersecurity, can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. Achieving this level typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills, and working at large technology companies or startups with significant funding.

What does a coding engineer do?

A coding engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications and systems using programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++. They analyze user requirements, write efficient code, and collaborate with teams to ensure functionality and performance. Proficiency in coding tools, version control, and problem-solving skills are essential for this role.

What is the difference between Coding Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectCoding EngineerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; coding certificationsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; coding certifications
Work EnvironmentTech companies, software firms, startupsTech companies, software firms, startups
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly used in engineering teams focusing on coding tasksBroader usage including application development and system design
Search & Comparison IntentHigh overlap with software development roles, focusing on coding tasksBroader role, but often compared in coding contexts

While both Coding Engineers and Software Developers require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, Coding Engineers typically focus more on writing, testing, and optimizing code within engineering teams. Software Developers often have a broader scope, including designing software architecture and working on various development phases. The roles overlap significantly, but Coding Engineers are more specialized in coding tasks within technical teams.

Will AI replace coders by 2040?

Coding engineers develop and maintain software, and while AI tools can automate certain coding tasks, they are unlikely to fully replace human coders by 2040. Instead, AI is expected to augment coding work, requiring engineers to adapt by learning new skills and working alongside AI systems.

Job description

Junior AI Coding Developer, Financial Systems – Delta, BC Permanent | On-site Salary: $55,000–$75,000 base

ABOUT US

STRIVE is a specialist recruitment firm offering proactive recruitment solutions in the areas of Technology, Accounting & Finance, Corporate Administration, and Manufacturing Operations. STRIVE supports various clients from small to medium-sized enterprises to Fortune 500 organizations for their permanent, contract, and temporary recruitment needs.

THE ROLE

STRIVE Recruitment is proud to partner with a well-established British Columbia–based metals company that runs its own internal software development team to recruit for a Junior AI Coding Developer, Financial Systems based in Delta, BC. They offer a small, close-knit team environment with a modern, AI-assisted development workflow, real mentorship, and a steady, quality-first approach to building software. The culture is collaborative and people-oriented

Our client is seeking a Junior AI Coding Developer, Financial Systems, who pairs an accounting background with a coding foundation to help build and improve the accounting, financial, and BI reporting systems the business relies on. This person will work on financial logic and reporting under the guidance of an experienced team, using AI coding tools to build features while critically reviewing what those tools produce. It is a junior, mentorship-supported role with growth potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and test software features (PHP/Laravel, SQL, some JavaScript) using AI coding tools — prompting, critically reviewing, and verifying the output.
  • Work on accounting and financial logic, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and invoicing.
  • Build BI and reporting solutions — SQL reports and dashboards that give operations and finance the numbers they need.
  • Write and run tests, and perform functional QA on what you build.
  • Follow the team's review and testing process — small, reviewable changes, with quality prioritized over speed.

Qualifications

  • An accounting background is the core of this role — a degree or diploma in accounting, or solid working knowledge of debits/credits, general ledger, AP/AR, and financial statements.
  • A programming foundation in any language and a genuine drive to grow; this is a junior role, and career-changers from accounting who have started coding are encouraged to apply.
  • Genuine interest in AI-assisted and agentic coding — this is built into how the team works day to day.
  • Comfort using AI coding tools (such as Claude, Copilot, or ChatGPT) and the ability to review their output critically rather than accept it at face value.
  • Detail-oriented, disciplined, and a clear communicator in English.

Preferred Skills

  • Laravel / PHP.
  • SQL Server and T-SQL.
  • JavaScript.
  • SQL reporting / BI tools such as Power BI or SSRS.
  • Exposure to accounting software such as SAP, QuickBooks, or NetSuite.
  • Automated testing and Git.
  • English / Mandarin bilingual.

What Success Looks Like

  • You deliver accounting and reporting features that are accurate, reliable, and genuinely useful to finance and operations.
  • You use AI coding tools effectively while consistently catching errors before they reach production.
  • You grow your development skills with the team's support and become a trusted bridge between the accounting and software sides of the business.
  • You contribute to a collaborative, quality-first culture and help close the team's accounting-knowledge gap.
