Course summary:

ARCH 405is a project-based course in design theory and critiquethat focusesonthe life cycles ofexisting buildings, materials,and resourcesfroma multi-scale perspective.The coursecentersontheconceptual and technicalapplication of sustainable and circular designapproachesto complex programs that respond to current socio-economic challengesand multifaceted crises.

Pedagogical outcomes:

The pedagogical outcomes of this course are:

  • The reinforcement of critical thinking on architecture,sustainability discourses,andtheproduction, maintenance,andend-of-lifeof the built environment.

  • Strengtheningconceptual and detaileddesign skills for multi-scale sustainable architectural proposals,with a focusonexisting resources.

  • The acquisition ofnewtheoretical knowledge on circular economy principles applied to the built environment through lectures, readings,and case-study analysis

  • The acquisition of new analytical and design tools and methods specific to circular and sustainable designand materials.

  • Expandingcommunication skills and methods toadequatelypresentoriginal and complex programmatic, design,and construction ideas, using various media (physical models, drawings, ...)

Coursestructure:

The course builds arounda series ofmodules. These modules entail:

  • Precedent critical analysis

  • Detailed reuse diagnoses of existing buildingsand overlooked material banks

  • Comprehensive development of architectural proposals for buildings applying circulardesign and sustainableprinciples.

Design theoryiscovered through lectures, distributed among course instructors, and in-class debates.Knowledgeoflocal projects isacquiredthrough visits,distributed amongthecourse instructors.Reviews are designed as key learningexercises, and instructors are involved in their preparation.

Teaching method:

The design pedagogy reliesmainlyon:

  • lectures, guest lectures,andin-classdebates

  • site visitsand interaction with practitioners

  • applied exercises to assimilate newanalytical, design,and communication skills

  • structured desk-critiquesto reinforce iterativedevelopment skills,workshopsand reviews

All students willbe requiredtodetail their workona scale of1:20 anddevelop scaled models.

TQR:

M.Arch. or equivalent (first professional degree);professional practicein sustainable construction;post-secondaryteaching experience in architecture;technicalandtheoreticalexpertiseoncircular and reuse design and (de-)constructionapproaches.

Coordination:

This studio will be team-taught,which means that multiple instructors will be assigned to teach this course. Instructors may work with multipledifferent groupsof students throughout the term.

Instructors will work closely withthe course teaching teamand administration ahead of the semester toprepare course material(including site, case study,and building identification and documentation)andfinalizecourse organization.All candidates will work closely with the Director as well as the Studio Coordinator to ensure that their course material meets the University Calendar regulations, the pedagogical objectives of the School and the specific Canadian Architectural Certification Board Student Performance Criteria (CACB - SPC) for their specificcourse.

Appointment is from August 31 to December 31, 2026.

6 credits. Salary $17,800.
