The Position
Under the supervision of the Athletic Director and the direction of a head coach, assist athletes and coaches in an assigned intercollegiate athletic class; assist in teaching rules, specific skills and strategies to student athletes during scheduled classes and provide technical support to a head coach by assisting with game management and recruitment to promote the intercollegiate athletic program throughout the San Diego Community College District.

Major Responsibilities
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
Assist student athletes by teaching rules, specific skills and strategies of assigned sport during scheduled classes.
Work with student athletes individually or in groups, reinforcing or following up on instructions provided by the head coach or other coaches.
Explain the concepts, principles and other aspects of gamesmanship to athletes.
Assist in controlling the distribution of athletic supplies, materials and equipment to athletes and coaches by checking items in and out, maintaining appropriate records and inventories, and ordering replacement items as necessary according to approved procedures.
Assist athletes in the proper selection, operation, and care of athletic equipment, uniforms and other gear; assist athletes to understand instructions provided by coaches.
Assist coaches with game management as assigned.
Assist with recruitment of athletes during the season and off-season.
If qualified, operate a van to transport athletes, coaches or equipment as assigned.
Prepare materials and equipment for demonstrations by coaches or for use by athletes.
Provide information to athletes, coaches, and others as requested; ensure that appropriate safety procedures are observed by athletes.
Assist in testing the competence and proficiency of student athletes; provide relevant information to head coach and other coaches regarding athletes' progress.
Repair and maintain athletic supplies and equipment as assigned; schedule other repair and maintenance of equipment according to approved procedures.
Provide training and work direction to student assistants as assigned.
Maintain athletic area in a clean and orderly manner; ensure the security of the facilities as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge:
Game management and gamesmanship.
Rules, skills and strategies of specific sport to which assigned.
Operation, use and characteristics of gear and equipment used in assigned sport.
Teaching methods and techniques.
Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Record-keeping techniques.
Safety regulations involving area of specialty.
Oral and written communications skills.
Technical aspects of field of specialty.
Principles and practices of training and work direction.
Awareness of the philosophy and objectives of the California Community College system.
Skills and Abilities:
Assist athletes in the understanding and application of rules, skills and strategies of assigned sport.
Explain instructions and assignments to athletes effectively.
Instruct athletes in the proper use and operation of gear and equipment related to assigned sport.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Assist in the recruitment of student athletes in accordance with the California State Athletic Code.
Work cooperatively with others.
Work independently with little direction.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Perform minor maintenance and repair of equipment.
Meet schedules and timelines.
Plan and organize job-related activities.
Train and provide work direction to others.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Training and Experience:
Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to: three years of tutoring, instructional or other experience directly related to athletics and satisfactory completion of sufficient specialized training in athletics to satisfactorily perform the assigned duties.

Licenses/Certificates/Credentials:
Valid California driver's license and/or Class B license with a valid medical certificate may be required for some positions.

Working Conditions
Physical Requirements:
Category II (may occasionally require SOME physical exertion, stamina and flexibility); subject to walking and standing for long periods of time; also subject to lifting and carrying of gear or equipment related to assigned sport.
Environment:
Involves an athletic competition environment; subject to associated hazards and exposures.

SELECTED CANDIDATE IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT:
Provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam for initial appointment (Note: The certificate must be renewed every 4 years as a condition of continuing employment);
Have fingerprints taken by a Live Scan computer at the district's expense (Clearance must be received prior to first day of employment); AND
Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
