Coding Assistants can work in various industries, supporting software engineers and development teams.

What does a coding assistant do?

As a Coding Assistant, your typical responsibilities may include writing and testing code, debugging simple issues, assisting with software documentation, and supporting more senior developers on various projects. You might also be tasked with code reviews, performing research for solutions, or maintaining version control repositories. Most Coding Assistants work closely with software engineers, designers, and quality assurance teams, gaining valuable exposure to the full development lifecycle. This hands-on experience builds foundational skills for advancing into more technical roles in software development.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a coding assistant?

To excel as a Coding Assistant, you need a solid understanding of programming languages, basic software development principles, and problem-solving abilities, often supported by a degree or coursework in computer science. Familiarity with development environments, version control systems like Git, and code editors is typically expected, with some employers valuing coding bootcamp certificates. Job description

LiveData ExplainedSenior Software Engineer

LiveData | Remote, United States (Eastern Time preferred) | Full-Time

About LiveData

LiveData is a healthcare technology company automating clinical and operational workflows across Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. Our engineering team treats AI coding assistants as standard development tools, not experiments. We build on a serverless-first AWS architecture to keep systems lean and costs low.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and ship production software across our serverless AWS stack. This is a hands-on individual contributor role on a small, AI-native team. You will own work end-to-end, from design through deployment and production support, and iterate quickly alongside engineers who use AI coding assistants every day.

We move fast because our team is small and AI-forward. We are looking for a senior engineer who already works this way: someone who uses AI to amplify their output, breaks loosely defined problems into shippable increments, and applies sound engineering judgment to keep systems reliable and maintainable. Healthcare domain knowledge is welcome but not required; the drive to build software that measurably improves patient outcomes matters most.

What You Will Do
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy production features and services across our serverless AWS stack
  • Own your work end-to-end, from design through deployment and production support
  • Write production code primarily in Python, with TypeScript where the work calls for it
  • Build and integrate REST APIs and event-driven workflows between clinical systems and modern tooling
  • Use AI coding assistants (Claude Code and similar tools) as a core part of your daily development workflow
  • Break loosely defined requirements into shippable increments and iterate quickly
  • Review code, raise the quality bar, and share engineering judgment with the team
  • Collaborate with Product on priorities, with QA on test strategy, and with DevOps on deployment and operations
  • Integrate with EHR systems and healthcare data standards where the work requires it
What You Bring

Required:

  • 5+ years developing and shipping production software
  • Strong proficiency in Python, with experience building services, APIs, and integrations
  • Demonstrated daily use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar) to amplify output
  • Hands-on production experience with the AWS serverless stack (Lambda, Aurora Serverless, S3, API Gateway) and serverless-first architecture
  • Experience defining infrastructure as code with AWS CDK
  • Familiarity with event-driven architecture patterns on AWS (EventBridge, SQS, SNS, Step Functions, or similar)
  • Solid understanding of REST API design and integration (JSON, OAuth)
  • Experience with SQL databases and data management
  • Bias toward shipping; able to turn loosely defined problems into reliable, maintainable software
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to work independently and own outcomes
  • Comfortable working from the command line; experience with Unix/Linux shell environments and composing small tools into reliable workflows
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; directing AI tools well is a language skill (precise prompts, clear specifications, and articulate code review), and that same clarity drives collaboration with Product, QA, DevOps, and clinical stakeholders

Preferred:

  • Experience in healthcare or a related regulated industry
  • Familiarity with EHR systems (MEDITECH, Oracle Health/Cerner, Epic) and clinical workflows
  • Knowledge of healthcare data standards (HL7, FHIR)
  • Experience with TypeScript and modern front-end tooling
Tech Stack
  • Languages: Python (primary), TypeScript, SQL
  • Cloud: AWS (Lambda, Aurora Serverless, S3, CDK)
  • Healthcare: MEDITECH, Oracle Health, Epic, HL7, FHIR
  • Development: Git, AI coding assistants (Claude Code), VS Code
  • Architecture: Serverless-first, REST APIs, event-driven workflows
What Sets This Role Apart
  1. AI-native by default. We build inside Claude Code and VS Code and treat AI coding assistants as standard tools. Demonstrated AI proficiency is a baseline, not a bonus. The engineers who get the most from these tools are those who write and reason clearly.
  2. Fast delivery on a small team. We are small and AI-forward, so senior engineers own real scope and see their work reach production quickly.
  3. Serverless-first architecture. We build on Lambda and Aurora Serverless rather than managing EC2 instances or containers. We value experience with serverless patterns.
  4. End-to-end ownership. You own your work from design through deployment and production support, collaborating with QA and DevOps rather than handing off and walking away.
  5. Direct connection to patient care. The systems you build support clinical and operational workflows, reducing errors and freeing clinicians to focus on patients.
Compensation & Benefits

We offer a competitive salary based on experience and location, with a target range of $145-$175K. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k); paid time off; and remote work flexibility.

Work Location

This is a remote-first role. While you can work from anywhere in the U.S., we strongly prefer candidates in the Eastern Time Zone. If you are located elsewhere, you should have experience working core business hours (8 AM to 5 PM ET). Additionally, you must be available to travel to the Boston area approximately once per quarter for in-person team collaboration.

Employment Authorization

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship now or in the future.

The chosen candidate must pass a standard background check/drug test.
