Under the guidance of the Recreation Coordinator and Program Instructors, this role assists in carrying out recreation programs with a primary focus on youth and preschool sports programs.
During the fall season, the Youth Sports Program Assistant will primarily work with preschool and youth sports programs focusing on soccer and T-ball/baseball. Program assistants work to support volunteer coaches in leading small teams of kids through simple skill and drill practice, active games, and scrimmage style play. Youth Sport Program Assistants may also work with other sport programs, (interest and qualification dependent) including: youth tennis, youth basketball, other miscellaneous youth sports.
Dates and hours needed:
Fall months (Late August - October) with the possibility of continuing into the winter season and beyond. Typical work hours are Tuesday and Thursday afternoons/evenings, though schedule may vary based on program needs and applicant availability/qualifications.
Starting wage - $10.00 per hour based on experience and qualifications:The position qualifies for $.25 increases annually.
This position will remain open until filled; applicants will be reviewed as they are received.
Essential Job Functions
Major Duties/Essential Functions
  • Assist in leading, demonstrating and instructing participants in recreation games/activities
  • Provide an interactive, positive, fun and safe environment for program participants
  • Assist in the supervision of all program participants
  • Provide assistance and support to Program Instructors
  • Provide clear communication to and from coordinators, instructors, participants and parents
  • Prepare program equipment, supplies and materials
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings
  • Other duties as assigned
Minor Duties/Responsibilities
  • Assist in setting up and cleaning up the facility/equipment before and after program sessions
  • Notify coordinator or instructors of problems and concerns regarding equipment, facilities, participants and/or spectators
  • Distribute any needed supplies or information to participants/parents
  • Complete timecard accurately and on time
  • Arrive on time, dressed appropriately according to the dress code and ready to interact with coworkers, participants and parents

Requirements of Work
Experience/Education
  • Must be 15 years of age or older
  • Previous instruction or coaching experience preferred. Prior experience working with kids is preferred.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices
Skill/Ability
  • Ability and willingness to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members, supervisor(s) and the public, and to deal with them in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to maintain a safe and positive learning environment
  • Ability and willingness to supervise and maintain control of participants in a group and/or 1-on-1 setting
  • Ability and willingness to keep accurate records and complete any necessary paperwork
