Description PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION The purpose of this classification is to perform general and specialized law enforcement work in order to preserve public peace, to protect lives, property and rights of the public; and to enforce statutory law and County ordinances. Employees in this classification may be assigned to perform work duties in Court Services, Traffic Investigation, Patrol, Detention and School Resource, Crime Prevention/DARE, Civil Process, Animal Control, or may be assigned as a member of a Special Response Team. *OPEN UNTIL FILLED* Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position.

The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Reduces the commission of crimes and maintains law enforcement by patrolling throughout the County; patrols County streets and neighborhoods in a law enforcement vehicle, bicycle, or on a motorcycle; apprehends and/or arrests persons who violate federal, State or County codes and laws; researches codes and laws.

Monitors radio calls; communicates with radio dispatcher and responds to complaints, reports of criminal events, requests for law enforcement, and domestic or public disputes; inspects troublesome areas and checks security of business establishments. Secures crime scenes; gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing victims, witnesses, informants and suspects; performs searches of people, vehicles and buildings; takes and files photographs; takes detailed confessions; prepares investigative reports of findings, facts, and related information; makes arrests and processes arrested suspects; detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis for probable cause for criminal acts; seizes or confiscates illegal substances or apparatus, such as drugs, drug equipment, or gambling devices; places and secures seized or confiscated items into property control; maintains the chain of custody of all evidence in accordance with current search and seizure laws and departmental policy; testifies in court as needed. Enforces traffic laws and regulations; detects traffic violators; issues parking violations; performs traffic accident investigations and makes reports; facilitates the movement of traffic and pedestrians around accidents, disabled traffic control devices, or heavily congested areas; assists disabled motorists; directs traffic for funerals and other public gatherings.

Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergency scenes and disaster areas; assists in the evacuation or rescue of persons and property in emergency situations, such as aircraft crashes, fires, floods, and other natural or manmade disasters. Prepares, obtains, and serves arrest warrants; serves legal documents; advises victims or other involved persons of their rights according to current law and the proper procedures to follow to prosecute a case; speaks with and refers citizens in need to appropriate public and social services. Completes and/or reviews paperwork documenting shift activities, offenses and accidents, victim and suspect statements, and other related information; completes State report documents to accurately record criminal offenses; prepares incident reports, arrest reports, and lab and property sheets; makes entries to the daily activity log after response to each dispatch; provides depositions to the court on incidents where they have direct knowledge or information; organizes and files records.

Assists other law enforcement personnel and agencies; serves as interpreter within the perimeters of the jail and court systems. Engages in public relations and community service activities and events to promote a positive image for the Department and to build cooperative and collaborative relationships with the community; provides crime prevention/safety services to the community. Attends roll call; attends in-service and specialized training; attends meetings.

Transports or escorts prisoners to locations within the County, either by foot or motorized vehicle; may maintain the security of inmates, staff, and the public at the jail. Cleans and inspects all issued equipment, to include uniforms, web gear, hand gun, ammunition, hand cuffs, flashlight, hats, badges, shoes, pursuit case, and other equipment; inspects assigned patrol vehicle prior to beginning shift; operates assigned vehicle and equipment in accordance with all laws and regulations of the State of Georgia and the Department. Provides Court Services as assigned: patrols County facilities to detect and deter security problems; provides information to the public concerning County facilities; calls calendar for court and brings parties into the court room; provides security to jurors and others at County facilities; identifies persons wanted on criminal warrants; enters data into Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) systems; locates wanted persons through records, telephone, teletype, and field checks; searches and arrests wanted persons and transports them to jail.

Performs School Resource functions: maintains presence on campus during normal school hours and other special times as requested by the school administration; enforces laws and ordinance and protects persons and property on school campuses; investigates crimes occurring on school grounds; secures and patrols school gates, parking lots, ball fields, and school facilities; appears as a school representative to juvenile mediation involving students; conducts individual conferences with teachers, parents, and students as requested to deal with individual problems or questions with respect to delinquency prevention; provides counseling for students on law enforcement related problems and makes referrals to proper agencies or individuals as needed. Performs Civil Process duties when assigned: enters all civil cases into the computer; responds to inquiries concerning service status; explains the process of serving civil papers; receives and maintains files on subpoenas for the District Attorney's Office; assists in presenting recommendations to the Superior Court Judges; monitors courtroom security. Provides Animal Control services: enforces animal control ordinances; issues verbal and written warnings and citations; presents cases in Magistrate Court; picks up wild, unwanted, or deceased animals to ensure the safety of the public; responds to and investigates complaints and inquiries; restrains wild and/or dangerous animals; serves as liaison between the County Animal Control unit and the County veterinarian; may collect money taken in by the Department from returning animals or adoption fees; coordinates the spay/neuter certificates and accounts for all money received; assists in euthanasia process as required.

Facilitates the DARE Program at schools: instructs students in elementary and middle schools; orders and purchases necessary materials needed for classes; attends school functions and meetings. Assists with crime prevention programs; prepares pamphlets, forms, letters, and other materials relevant to the promotion of crime prevention services and programs; conducts surveys; prepares press releases and public service announcements; conducts crime analysis on patterns and trends to determine action plan and strategies to promote community awareness of crime prevention techniques; coordinates efforts and programs with public and private agencies. May participate as a member of the special response team; responds to emergency call for situations involving hostage situations, barricaded persons, high-risk drug raids, riots, escaped prisoner searches, high security activities, or other situations requiring Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team assistance; participates in regular training activities.

May coordinate and develop training programs for other officers; maintains training facilities and range; maintains departmental training records; schedules training; assigns/schedules instructors as needed. Operates a computer terminal, vehicle, firearms, law enforcement equipment, office equipment, video equipment, animal control equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED; six month of experience in security or law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. Must be certified in CPR and First Aid.

Must possess and maintain certification as a Deputy Sheriff, Detention Officer. Supplemental Information PERFORMANCE APTITUDES Data Utilization: Requires the ability to calculate and/or tabulate data. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives. Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.

ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may involve heavier objects and materials (up to 200 pounds). Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.
