Coal Operation Manager Jobs (NOW HIRING)

Sandy Creek Energy Station is a 900-megawatt coal-fired power plant located in Riesel, Texas. It features a single IHI supercritical pulverized coal boiler, a Toshiba steam turbine generator, and Alstom air-quality control systems, making it one of the largest new coal plants in the United States. The plant primarily utilizes Powder River Basin coal and has the capacity to generate electricity for over 900,000 Texas homes and businesses.

Opportunity Summary

NAES Corporation has an immediate opening for a Shift Supervisor at Sandy Creek Energy Station. The Shift Supervisor leads Shift Operations personnel and is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the facility. This position provides operational leadership during normal, abnormal, and emergency conditions and may assume the responsibilities of the Operations Manager when required.

The Shift Supervisor also serves as the senior on-site supervisor during after-hours, weekends, and holidays when plant management is not present and may provide relief control room coverage as needed.

Your scope of responsibility as Shift Supervisor includes the following primary functions:

• Assist the Operations Manager with daily plant operations, staffing, scheduling, and manpower requirements; assume Operations Manager responsibilities when required.
• Supervise, coach, and provide direction to Shift Operations personnel and Coal Yard Technicians to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation.
• Lead shift personnel in accordance with company policies, plant procedures, operating requirements, technical specifications, and applicable safety and environmental regulations.
• Oversee employee development and performance, including training, coaching, recognition, performance assessments, and corrective action as appropriate.
• Supervise plant start-up, operation, and shutdown activities and ensure equipment remains within established design and operating limits.
• Monitor plant conditions, alarms, operating data, historian information, logs, and equipment status; identify abnormal conditions and direct troubleshooting and corrective actions.
• Serve as the senior on-site supervisor when plant management is not present, making operational, personnel, and safety decisions as required.
• Lead operations requirements during planned and forced outages, including equipment isolation, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), maintenance coordination, system turnover, testing, and return-to-service activities.
• Coordinate routine maintenance, inspections, and maintenance work requests while maintaining safe operating conditions and plant priorities.
• Ensure plant operations comply with dispatch requirements while supporting generation, reliability, availability, and operating efficiency.
• Maintain accurate shift documentation and communicate plant status, equipment issues, upset conditions, outages, and other significant events to management and incoming shifts.
• Ensure hazardous materials and wastes are handled safely and in accordance with applicable environmental requirements.
• Support operator qualification and development through on-the-job training, shift training, safety meetings, and ongoing coaching.

Working Relationships

The Shift Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager, provides guidance and advice to maintenance personnel on matters pertaining to project operations and gives direction to Shift Operations personnel and Coal Yard Technicians.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Work is performed in a coal-fired power plant environment and includes standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, and working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights. Regular lifting of materials and equipment up to 50 pounds is required.

Duties may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling coal, ash, and other materials associated with plant operations. Personnel may be exposed to coal dust, fly ash, hazardous chemicals, high noise levels, extreme heat near boilers and other equipment, and fluctuating outdoor weather conditions.

Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and may include hard hats, safety glasses, face shields, air-purifying or supplied-air respirators, hearing protection, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), chemical-resistant suits, hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection equipment. Respirator fit testing may be required based on job responsibilities. Smoking is strictly prohibited in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

The Shift Supervisor follows DuPont’s rotating 12-hour shift schedule, providing 24/7 coverage through a structured rotation of day and night shifts. This position will require extended hours, flexible shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed to support plant operations and business needs and may also require callout availability. Depending on the position, on-call status may or may not apply.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $50 to $65 per hour, along with eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

Operational Expertise and Leadership Competencies

• High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate degree in power plant technology, engineering technology, or a related technical field is preferred. Relevant power generation, industrial, or military experience may be considered in lieu of additional education.
• Extensive power plant operations experience, preferably within a coal-fired, solid-fuel, or large steam-electric generating facility; supercritical boiler experience is highly desirable.
• Prior Control Room Operator, Shift Supervisor, Operations Supervisor, or comparable senior operations experience with responsibility for safe and reliable plant operation.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise and develop operating personnel, coordinate shift activities, and make sound decisions during normal, abnormal, and emergency operating conditions.
• Strong technical knowledge of Rankine-cycle power generation, including supercritical boilers, steam turbines, generators, auxiliary equipment, electrical systems, process controls, and balance-of-plant systems.
• Proven experience leading operations requirements during planned and forced outages, including equipment isolation, LOTO, maintenance coordination, system turnover, testing, and return-to-service activities.
• Ability to troubleshoot plant equipment and interpret P&IDs, control schematics, operating procedures, technical specifications, equipment data, alarms, and other plant technical documentation.
• Working knowledge of plant water chemistry, water treatment, chemical and hazardous material handling, industrial safety, and environmental and regulatory requirements applicable to coal-fired generation.
• Strong communication and decision-making skills with the ability to coordinate effectively across plant functions, direct corrective actions, and communicate plant status.
• Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
