SUMMARY:
To help each participating student achieve a high level of skill development, and create an appreciation for the values of student connectedness, discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem.
OVERALL DUTIES
  1. Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  2. Plans, schedules, and attends a regular program of practice in season.
  3. Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted.
  4. Establishes participant criteria based on student athlete skill, ability, and eligibility and informs parents and participants of these criteria.
  5. Works collaboratively with the athletic director and varsity head coach in implementing the philosophy and direction of the sport.
  6. Enforces discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
  7. Maintains, monitors, and reacts to daily attendance reports and participant emergency medical cards as necessary.
  8. Demonstrates knowledge in the areas of physical and emotional health and safety.
  9. Maintains competency in understanding and enforcing WIAA, Big 8 Conference and School Board rules, policies, and procedures.
  10. Enforces WIAA and district policies regarding eligibility criteria in interscholastic competition in the sport and monitors it through district software.
  11. Adheres to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention and follow up.
  12. Works closely with the high school athletics and activities director and varsity head coach in interscholastic contests.
  13. Recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms to head varsity coach.
  14. Responsible for all equipment.
  15. Develops a consistent and positive public communications procedure through the school and media to inform the parents and the general public about the athletic program.
  16. Acts as a liaison with the booster clubs.
  17. Keeps other coaches informed of rules and other relevant changes within the particular sport.
  18. Uses generally accepted practices and discretion in determining the proper course of action while using good decision-making skills. Demonstrates emotional maturity.
  19. Represents the district in professional manner.
  20. Other duties may be assigned by the athletic department.
PRE-SEASON DUTIES
  1. Plans, communicates, and executes with cooperation of the head varsity coach a pre-season meeting for prospective student-athletes and their parents to communicate team schedule, policies and procedures.
  2. Develops and distributes a team handbook in cooperation with the varsity head coach by the first team meeting to include at least the following: practice schedule, team rules and policies, coaching philosophy statement, special dates and events, game schedule, team tryout process and criteria, lettering policy, how parents/students should communicate with head coach, and how players earn playing time.
  3. Attends and participates in Athletic Department sponsored athletic code meetings.
  4. Attends annual clinics or workshops that aim to enhance knowledge of the specific sport or other area as assigned by administration.
  5. Selects and defines responsibilities of student managers.
  6. Determines and communicates responsibilities of assistant coaches. Provides inservices for assistant and sub-varsity coaches via staff meetings, program goals, duties definition and expectations, etc. Recommends assistant or volunteer coaches to the High School Athletics and Activities Director.
IN-SEASON DUTIES
  1. Takes the initiative to communicate activity on a regular basis to the High School Athletics and Activities Director.
  2. Plans and executes a regular program of practice in season.
  3. Develops and completes practice plans for each practice session. Provides documentation for each practice session upon request of administration.
  4. Establishes a team philosophy and system that is complementary and/or supportive to that of the entire program.
  5. Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season.
POST-SEASON DUTIES
  1. Collects, inventories, and arranges to clean and repair all equipment. Provides inventory documentation upon request of administration.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises students of particular program.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Coaching in the particular sport, with at least 3 years of experience. Experience at the middle/high school level preferred. First aid, CPR, and Blood Borne Pathogen training is required. Knowledge in sports medicine would be desirable.
COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents or employees of the district.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Exhibit qualities of leadership and organizational ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administration. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in verbal and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, WIAA requirements, and School Board policies. Ability to use computers and other technology to accomplish job responsibilities.
ANALYTICAL AND REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
TEMPERAMENTS: Ability to connect, inspire, and lead students with a variety of learning styles and diverse backgrounds. Ability to direct others, deal with people and influence people in their opinions, attitudes, and judgments. Ability to work effectively with people who express conflicting opinions. Ability to maintain poise, develop a pattern of consistency when dealing with stressful situations, and put the best interest of the students as a whole above all else. Ability to make judgments and decisions by solving problems, making evaluations, or reaching conclusions. Ability to perform a variety of duties.
