Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated student to join us as a Kettering Co-op. Areas available for co-ops are software development, IT security, or predictive modeling. Please indicate somewhere on your application which areas are of interest to you. These positions are in Lansing, Michigan. Some may potentially be available in Grand Rapids, Michigan depending upon team placement. We accept A & B section students.

Software Developer Co-op:
Responsibilities include developing, maintaining, and supporting software applications for new and existing systems. The position requires the person to:
  • Define, develop, test, analyze, and maintain software programs and applications
  • Actively participate in code/design reviews as well as brainstorming sessions
  • Develop program and system documentation
  • Analyze and fixes software errors in a timely and accurate fashion
  • Consult with users, architects, project leaders, and management to resolve problems and suggest alternatives
  • Assist with other duties in the department when requested by management

Desired Skills and Experience
  • Students must be working toward a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Our development technologies include but are not limited to the following: Java, JavaScript/HTML/CSS, VB.NET, SAP ABAP, SQL, and COBOL
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery is a plus
  • Enthusiasm for driving improvement by finding and implementing solutions to new challenges

Responsible for reducing IT Security risk and responding to incidents. Responsibilities include:
  • Researching, developing, maintaining and supporting security software tools
  • Investigating security incidents
  • Participating in security risk assessments and working with other teams to remediate security vulnerabilities
  • Educating other company associates on security best practices
  • Recommending security policies

Desired Skills and Experience
  • Students must be working toward a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, the Concentration or Minor of Cybersecurity is preferred.

Predictive Modeler Co-op:
Responsibilities include:
  • Using statistical or machine learning techniques to build models that address business needs and comply with regulatory requirements
  • Working with large, complex data sets and developing a working knowledge of Auto-Owners data structures and metrics
  • Conducting ad-hoc analysis and presenting results clearly at multiple-levels of stakeholders through visual displays of quantitative information
  • Creating clear and easy to understand documentation for models
  • Monitoring model performance and implementing iterative improvements

Desired Skills & Experience
  • Student must be working toward a bachelor's degree in Kettering's Computer Science area. The AI concentration or minor is preferred.
  • Outstanding problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • An understanding of statistical modeling or data science concepts, especially clustering, regression, and classification techniques.
  • Aptitude and willingness to learn new things
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • (Preferred) Proficiency with common coding languages (Python, R, SQL, etc.)
  • (Preferred) Advanced degree in a quantitative discipline. If you are studying for Kettering's Master degree in Data Science, please clearly list if you'd be looking to co-op or only intern for a summer.
  • (Preferred) Professional experience building models with large data sets
