Job description

Hexagon Autonomous Solutions is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our GNSS positioning hardware team for a 1-year period from May 3, 2027 to May 2, 2028. This role emphasizes mechanical design, enclosure development, design verification, and hands-on hardware validation supporting the innovation of precision positioning technologies.

You will gain practical experience designing and validating GNSS products, antennas, and ruggedized electronics enclosures using modern CAD tools and environmental test equipment. The role includes exposure to the full product development cycle, from concept and prototype development through qualification testing and manufacturing release.

Location: Calgary, AB (onsite)

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, your contributions will include:

  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies, detailed drawings, and engineering documentation.
  • Design GNSS product enclosures, antenna housings, seals, gaskets, mounting systems, and test fixtures.
  • Support PCB integration and packaging while considering antenna performance, EMI, and EMC requirements.
  • Create manufacturing drawings including GD&T and tolerance analysis.
  • Build, assemble, and evaluate prototypes for fit, function, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Develop and execute design verification (DVT) test specifications plans and procedures.
  • Support environmental testing including Sine Sweep, Random Vibration, HALT, thermal cycling, ingress protection, and leak testing.
  • Analyze test results, troubleshoot failures, and participate in root-cause investigations.
  • Participate in Design FMEA (DFMEA) activities to improve product robustness and reliability.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing teams on materials, processes, tooling, and product quality.
  • Contribute to design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives for mechanical design and testing processes.

Must-Have:

  • Registered in an Engineering Internship/Co-op program (Mechanical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing, or related discipline) and completed at least 2nd or 3rd year of studies by the start of the work term.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, NX, Inventor, or similar.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written).
  • Available for a 12-month, full-time (37.5 h/week) internship in Calgary, AB.
Nice-to-Have:
  • Interest in mechanical product design, electronics packaging, or precision positioning technologies.
  • Familiarity with GD&T, engineering drawings, and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with enclosure design, sealing methods, and leak prevention techniques.
  • Familiarity with environmental qualification testing including vibration, shock, HALT, thermal cycling, and ingress protection testing.
  • Understanding of DFMEA, root-cause analysis, and reliability engineering concepts.
  • Experience integrating PCBs and electronic assemblies into mechanical designs.
  • Awareness of EMI/EMC requirements and how mechanical design impacts GNSS antenna performance.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, machining, or 3D printing.
Key Success Factors:
  • Strong attention to detail and a "first-time right" mindset.
  • Comfortable working independently and within a collaborative team.
  • Motivated by challenging technical work with a focus on quality and precision.
  • Able to follow complex instructions while knowing when to ask for help.
