What is a co op audio engineer?

A Co Op Audio Engineer is a student or early-career professional who participates in a cooperative education program, gaining hands-on experience in audio engineering while still in school. This role typically involves assisting with recording, mixing, editing, and maintaining audio equipment under the supervision of experienced engineers. Co Op Audio Engineers work in studios, live event venues, or broadcast environments, learning industry-standard software and equipment. The position is designed to provide real-world experience and networking opportunities to help launch a career in audio engineering.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a co op audio engineer expect to work on during their placement?

As a Co Op Audio Engineer, you can expect to assist with a variety of tasks such as setting up and maintaining audio equipment, participating in recording sessions, editing audio tracks, and collaborating with senior engineers on mixes. You may also be involved in troubleshooting technical issues, cataloging audio assets, and occasionally engaging in live sound support or post-production work. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to industry workflows, teamwork, and the opportunity to develop technical skills under the guidance of experienced professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a co op audio engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Co-Op Audio Engineer, you need a solid understanding of audio recording, editing, and mixing, often supported by coursework or a degree in audio engineering or a related field. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and relevant audio hardware is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial to producing high-quality audio content and ensuring successful collaboration in dynamic studio environments.

What is the difference between Co Op Audio Engineer vs Audio Technician?

AspectCo Op Audio EngineerAudio Technician
CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a degree in audio engineering or related fieldOften holds a diploma or certification in audio technology or related area
Work EnvironmentStudio, live events, production companies, often in training or internship rolesRecording studios, broadcast stations, live venues, technical support roles
Industry UsageUsed as an entry-level or internship position in media, entertainment, and production industriesCommonly employed in technical support, maintenance, and live sound setups

The main difference is that a Co Op Audio Engineer is typically a student or intern gaining hands-on experience in audio engineering, while an Audio Technician is a more experienced role focused on technical support and equipment operation. Both roles are essential in audio production but differ in experience level and responsibilities.

Do co op audio engineers make a lot of money?

Co-op audio engineers typically earn entry-level wages that are lower than full-time professionals, often reflecting their student or internship status. Salaries can vary based on location, experience, and the complexity of projects, but generally, co-op positions are designed as learning opportunities with modest pay. Advancing skills with industry-standard tools like Pro Tools or Logic Pro can lead to higher earning potential in full-time roles.

Is there a demand for co op audio engineers?

Co op audio engineers are in demand in industries such as music production, film, television, and live events, where technical skills with audio equipment and editing software are valued. Opportunities often require hands-on experience, relevant certifications, and familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs).

Job description

SoC Audio Engineer, Platform Architecture

Do you love crafting elegant solutions to the hardest problems in audio and acoustics? Are you a big-picture, forward-thinking engineer who understands how audio subsystems integrate into a SoC and a system? At Apple, our Architecture group is responsible for connecting the hardware and software that bring sound to life across our products. Join this team, and you'll collaborate with engineers across Apple to design how our audio technologies work in unison!

Description

We are looking for a SoC Audio Architect to join our team defining the audio subsystem architecture for Apple's SoCs — technology that powers experiences across nearly every Apple product, from ultra-low-power keyword detection to high-fidelity spatial audio. This is primarily an audio subsystem architecture role, not an audio IP design role; experience designing audio IP is valued as background but is not the core function of the position. In this highly visible role, you will own the multi-generational subsystem architecture and roadmap for audio subsystems, collaborating closely with Silicon Engineering, Software Engineering, and Hardware Engineering teams to size subsystems and optimize trade-offs between performance, power, and area. You will have visibility across every product line and be accountable for architectures that scale across the portfolio, from early concept through tape-out and into shipping product.

Responsibilities
  • Define and own architecture specifications for audio subsystems across multiple Apple SoC product lines
  • Author and maintain multi-generational technical roadmaps for audio subsystems, securing executive buy-in
  • Contribute to performance and power modeling of audio workloads to determine subsystem sizing and partitioning across interfaces, accelerators, DSPs, and software
  • Collaborate with Silicon Engineering, Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering, and Firmware teams from concept through tape-out
  • Present architecture and performance study results to cross-functional and executive audiences to inform technical decisions
  • Mentor engineers and support onboarding and talent development within the team
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with SoC architecture principles
  • Experience with SoC audio processing
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree with 10+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Experience defining architecture specifications for audio, DSP, or signal processing subsystems within an SoC
  • In-depth understanding of SoC architecture concepts, such as on-chip fabric protocols, memory concepts, and clocking, reset, and power management
  • Skilled in digital signal processing algorithms, including audio algorithms
  • Understanding of SoC power modeling and Power/Performance/Area (PPA) optimization
  • Understanding of SoC audio interfaces (e.g., I2S, PDM, TDM, MIPI SWI3S)
  • Proficiency in hardware/software co-design, including familiarity with RTL design concepts (e.g., System Verilog)
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence across organizations.

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $175,000 and $263,300, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
