Job description

C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., Inc. is seeking an experienced Pipe Foreman to lead utility crews on heavy civil, roadway, and site development projects in the Savannah, Georgia area. We are looking for a hands-on leader with experience installing and maintaining underground utilities, managing crews, coordinating equipment and materials, and keeping production moving safely and efficiently.

What You'll Do

As a Utility Foreman, you will be responsible for leading and coordinating utility installation activities on active construction projects.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead and supervise utility crews performing underground utility installation.
  • Plan and coordinate daily work activities, manpower, equipment, and materials.
  • Oversee the installation of water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and other underground utilities.
  • Read and interpret construction plans, utility profiles, specifications, and grade information.
  • Ensure utilities are installed to the correct line, grade, depth, and project specifications.
  • Coordinate with project superintendents, project managers, survey crews, inspectors, subcontractors, and other trades.
  • Direct equipment operators, pipe crews, laborers, and other field personnel.
  • Monitor production and adjust crew activities to keep work moving efficiently.
  • Identify potential conflicts with existing utilities, structures, or other jobsite conditions.
  • Ensure proper trench safety, excavation practices, and jobsite safety procedures are followed.
  • Inspect completed work and maintain a high standard of quality.
  • Track materials and communicate upcoming equipment, material, and manpower needs.
  • Complete daily reports and communicate project progress, challenges, and safety concerns to management.
  • Lead by example and promote a strong safety culture on every job.
What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience leading crews performing underground utility installation on heavy civil, roadway, or site development projects.
  • Strong knowledge of water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage systems.
  • The ability to read and interpret construction drawings, utility plans, profiles, and specifications.
  • A solid understanding of line and grade requirements.
  • Experience coordinating excavation, trenching, pipe installation, backfill, and compaction activities.
  • Knowledge of underground utility safety and trench safety requirements.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • The ability to plan ahead, solve problems in the field, and keep a crew productive.
  • Experience working around heavy equipment and active construction operations.
  • A hands-on leadership style and willingness to work alongside the crew when needed.
