Cnc Weekend information

What is a CNC weekend position?

A CNC Weekend position refers to a role where an individual operates and maintains Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines during weekend shifts. These technicians or operators are responsible for setting up machinery, monitoring production runs, and performing quality checks, typically during Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, or other designated weekend hours. This schedule is often offered to meet increased production demands or to keep manufacturing processes running continuously. CNC Weekend roles may include premium pay due to the non-traditional working hours. Candidates usually need experience with CNC machines, attention to detail, and the ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues.

What are the typical work hours and team dynamics for a CNC weekend position?

CNC Weekend roles typically involve working extended shifts over the weekend, such as 12-hour shifts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, allowing for more days off during the week. You’ll often be part of a smaller, close-knit team that handles production runs and troubleshooting with less direct supervision compared to weekday shifts. Communication is essential, as you’ll need to coordinate with weekday teams to ensure smooth transitions and consistent quality. This schedule can be ideal for those seeking work-life balance or who prefer condensed workweeks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC weekend operator?

To excel as a CNC Operator on the weekend shift, you need a strong understanding of machining processes, blueprint reading, and experience with CNC programming, usually backed by a high school diploma or technical certification in manufacturing. Familiarity with CNC machines, G-code, CAD/CAM software, and precision measuring tools is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the efficient production of high-quality parts, minimize downtime, and maintain safety in a manufacturing environment during off-hours.

Job description

Voortman CNC Operator – Structural Steel | $22–$26/hr | Work 36, Get Paid for 40

PVS Structures (Owen Industries) – Carter Lake, IA (Near Downtown Omaha) | Fri–Sun, 5:30 AM – 5:30 PM

Run a Brand New Voortman. Work 3 Days. Get Paid for 40 Hours.

That's not a typo. At PVS Structures, our weekend shift operators work Friday through Sunday — 36 hours — and get paid for a full 40. Add in the chance to be the first operator on a brand new Voortman CNC fabrication system, and this is an opportunity that doesn't come around often.

If you have experience on a Voortman or similar CNC structural steel platform — or you're a strong CNC operator with structural steel experience and the drive to learn — keep reading.

The Details

  • Starting pay: $22.00–$26.00/hr depending on experience
  • Hours: Friday–Sunday, 5:30 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Paid hours: 40 hrs/week — even though you only work 36
  • Four weekdays off — every week, all year

About the Voortman

The Voortman is a fully automated, multi-process CNC fabrication system designed specifically for structural steel — including beams, columns, channels, and angles. It combines drilling, milling, scribing, sawing, and coping operations in a single automated line, controlled through advanced CNC software. Operating a Voortman requires a strong understanding of structural steel, CNC programming logic, tooling selection, and quality inspection — all in a high-output production environment.

What You'll Do

  • Set up, operate, and monitor the Voortman CNC fabrication system to produce structural steel components including beams, columns, and sections
  • Load raw structural steel material and manage the automated feed system for efficient production runs
  • Read and interpret structural steel blueprints, shop drawings, and technical specifications to verify program parameters and job requirements
  • Select appropriate tooling, drill bits, and cutting speeds for each job and material type
  • Verify CNC programs against drawings and job specs before and during production
  • Inspect finished components for dimensional accuracy and quality using precision measuring tools including calipers, tape measures, and gauges
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting on the machine to minimize downtime
  • Identify and communicate programming or setup issues to the supervisor proactively
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with company safety and ISO standards
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, and scheduling teams to keep jobs on track

What We're Looking For

  • 1–3 years of CNC machining or CNC operation experience — structural steel fabrication experience strongly preferred
  • Prior experience operating a Voortman, Peddinghaus, Ficep, or similar structural steel CNC system is a significant advantage
  • Ability to read and interpret structural steel blueprints, shop drawings, and weld symbols
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools — calipers, micrometers, tape measures
  • Strong understanding of machine operations, tooling, and cutting parameters
  • Basic familiarity with CAD/CAM software is beneficial but not required — we can train the right candidate
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach
  • Reliable, safety-focused, and able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Available and committed to a consistent Friday–Sunday schedule
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certification or vocational training is a plus

What's In It For You

$22–$26/hr depending on experience ✅ Paid for 40 hours — every week — while only working 36Four weekdays off — Monday through Thursday are yours ✅ The opportunity to own a brand new machine from day one ✅ Health, Dental & Vision insuranceLife/AD&D and Disability coverage401(k) with company matchPTO and 9 paid holidays — accrual begins immediately ✅ Wellness program with premium incentives ✅ Opportunities for skill development and advancement within Owen Industries
