How much do cnc tech jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for cnc tech in Virginia is $24.86, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.00 and $28.61 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC Tech, you need a solid understanding of machining processes, blueprint reading, and mechanical aptitude, usually supported by vocational training or an associate degree in manufacturing or a related field. Familiarity with CNC programming languages (like G-code), machine operation software, and quality measurement tools is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help in maintaining precision and collaborating with team members. These skills ensure efficient production, minimize errors, and uphold quality standards in a manufacturing environment.

What does a CNC Tech do?

A CNC Tech, or Computer Numerical Control Technician, operates and maintains CNC machines that fabricate parts and products from raw materials. Their responsibilities include setting up machines, loading materials, inputting instructions, monitoring production, and inspecting finished products for accuracy and quality. CNC Techs also perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot issues to ensure smooth operation. This role requires technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.

What is the highest paid CNC machinist?

The highest paid CNC machinists typically earn over $70,000 annually, with top earners reaching $90,000 or more, especially those with advanced skills, certifications, and experience operating complex CNC machines in specialized industries. Salaries vary based on location, industry, and level of expertise, with those working in aerospace or medical manufacturing often earning the highest wages.

What is the difference between Cnc Tech vs Cnc Operator?

AspectCnc TechCnc Operator
CredentialsHigh school diploma, technical training, certificationsHigh school diploma, basic training
Work EnvironmentMachine setup, maintenance, troubleshootingOperating CNC machines, monitoring production
Job ResponsibilitiesProgram setup, tool changes, quality checksRunning machines, inspecting parts, adjusting controls

While both Cnc Tech and Cnc Operator work with CNC machinery, Cnc Tech typically involves more technical tasks like machine setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Cnc Operators focus on running machines and monitoring production. Cnc Tech roles often require additional certifications and technical training, making them more involved in machine programming and repair.

What are some common challenges CNC Techs face when troubleshooting machine issues, and how can they be addressed?

CNC Techs often encounter challenges such as machine calibration errors, tool wear, and unexpected software glitches. Addressing these issues typically involves a systematic approach: verifying machine parameters, inspecting tooling for signs of damage, and consulting the machine's diagnostic software. Collaboration with maintenance teams and programmers is crucial for resolving more complex problems, and continuous training helps CNC Techs stay updated on the latest troubleshooting techniques. Proactively performing routine maintenance can also help minimize unexpected downtime.

Are CNC technicians in demand?

CNC technicians are in demand due to the ongoing need for precision manufacturing and automation in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical devices. Skilled technicians who can operate, program, and maintain CNC machines are sought after, especially those with certifications and experience in CAD/CAM software. Employment prospects are generally strong in manufacturing regions with advanced production facilities.

Can you make 100k as a CNC machinist?

Earning $100,000 as a CNC machinist is possible with experience, advanced skills, and working in high-paying industries or locations. Typically, senior CNC operators with certifications and proficiency in programming and setup can reach or exceed this salary level, especially with overtime or supervisory roles.

Is a CNC job a good career?

A CNC technician role involves operating and programming computer numerical control machines used in manufacturing. It offers stable employment, opportunities for skill development, and typically requires technical training or certifications. The job environment is often factory-based with regular shifts, making it a viable career choice for those interested in manufacturing technology.
