Responsibilities & Qualifications

Novelis in Bay Minette has an exciting opportuntity for a Lead Automation Engineer. The incumbent for this position designs, develops, configures, and implements automated systems and processes to improve efficiency and productivity by automating machinery processes. A successful incumbent will analyze existing systems, identify areas for improvement, and create innovative solutions using advanced technologies and programming languages. They will also lead and participate in projects of moderate to high complexity or risk to design, modify, upgrade, maintain, or troubleshoot plant manufacturing equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, programs, simulates, and tests automated machinery to streamline manufacturing processes.
  • Uses design techniques to build automated systems such as: measurement functions, control functions, and actuators, etc.
  • Considers automation workflow, production layout, and safety measures when designing automated machinery processes.
  • Drafts and designs detailed documentation for design specifications and additional relevant documents. Adheres to international and local regulatory standards for design, process, and safety considerations.
  • Develops and defines control system applications for various machinery and equipment using technologies or platforms such as ladder logic programming for programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human machine interfaces (HMIs), data control systems (DCSs), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), computerized numerical control (CNC) systems or motion control technology.
  • Audits current equipment and automated processes to determine failure rates. Coordinates
  • quality control objectives and activities to resolve production problems, maximize product
  • reliability, and minimize cost.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate automation solutions, conduct testing and troubleshooting, and provide technical support and training to ensure successful implementation and operation of automated systems.
  • Responsible for the implementation, operation, and maintenance of instrument/electrical systems.
  • Checks control system schematics and specifications and uses software and testing
  • equipment to diagnose and resolve system malfunctions.
  • Creates preventative maintenance plans.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to less experienced technologists and engineers.
  • Adhere to and support company quality, environmental, health & safety, and certification standards, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, IATF 16949:2016, and ASI Certifications, where applicable.

Novelis' newly announced Bay Minette facility will be located 35 miles northeast of Mobile AL and 45 miles west of Pensacola FL and is expected to create approximately 1000 high-paying advanced careers in modern manufacturing. This highly advanced rolling and recycling facility will be the first of its kind. It will primarily serve our customers in the beverage can and automotive markets.
