CNC Lead Programmer - Waukesha, WI
Position Summary
The CNC Lead Programmer specializes in the operation, preventative maintenance, and
training on horizontal CNC machines-is responsible for developing the technical code that
drives complex, multi-axis manufacturing processes, and overseeing the CNC department. This
role requires specific expertise in 3/4-axis operations often associated with horizontal mill
configurations.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead Operator: Operate key CNC equipment, mentor and develop CNC operators, and
maintain the work area.
• Program Development: Create, test, and optimize G-code and M-code programs using
CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, SolidWorks, or Edgecam) for 3, 4, and 5-axis horizontal
machining.
• Process Engineering: Determine the most efficient manufacturing sequence, including
tool selection, spindle speeds, and feed rates to maximize tool life and part finish.
• Fixturing and Workholding: Design and develop custom fixture layouts and setups to
secure workpieces during horizontal machining cycles.
• Blueprints and GD&T: Interpret complex engineering drawings and blueprints using
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure all components meet tight
tolerances (often down to .0005).
• Program Prove-Out: Conduct dry runs and test operations to "validate" new programs,
making manual adjustments at the machine controller (e.g., Fanuc, Siemens) to ensure
accuracy.
• Quality Assurance: Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using precision tools
like micrometers, calipers, and bore gauges.
• Technical Support: Provide troubleshooting guidance to machinists and operators
during set-up and production.
Required Skills and Qualifications
• Technical Education: High school diploma or GED is the minimum; an Associate's
degree in manufacturing technology or a related engineering field is highly preferred.
• Experience: Requires 2-5+ years of experience in CNC programming, specifically with
multi-axis horizontal equipment.
• Software Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of CAM platforms (Mastercam, SolidWorks)
and simulation software.
CNC Lead
• Mathematical Aptitude: Strong proficiency in shop math, including algebra, geometry,
and trigonometry.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
