What is a CNC programmer 5 axis?

A CNC Programmer 5 Axis is a specialized technician who creates and optimizes computer programs to control five-axis CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. These machines can move tools or parts in five different directions, allowing for complex and precise manufacturing, often used in industries like aerospace, automotive, and medical device production. The programmer interprets engineering drawings, selects cutting tools, and writes code to ensure that complex parts are machined accurately and efficiently. Their expertise helps maximize productivity, reduce errors, and maintain high-quality standards in manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC programmer 5 axis, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC Programmer 5 Axis, you need expertise in computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and a strong understanding of multi-axis machining principles, often supported by relevant technical training or certifications. Familiarity with programming languages such as G-code, experience using software like Mastercam or Siemens NX, and knowledge of CNC controller systems are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set standout professionals apart in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring precise, efficient, and safe production of complex components in advanced manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by CNC programmers specializing in 5-axis machining, and how can they be addressed?

CNC Programmers working with 5-axis machines often encounter challenges such as complex toolpath generation, collision avoidance, and precise fixture setup. These machines allow for greater flexibility and part complexity, but require advanced programming skills and careful planning to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers, staying current with the latest CAM software updates, and investing time in simulation and verification can help address these challenges and minimize errors during production.

What is the difference between Cnc Programmer 5 Axis vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc Programmer 5 AxisCnc Machinist
Primary RoleDesigns and programs complex 5-axis CNC machining operationsOperates CNC machines, sets up and maintains equipment
Skills & CertificationsG-code programming, CAD/CAM software, precision measurementMachine operation, basic programming, tooling knowledge
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, aerospace, automotive, precision partsMachine shops, manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageHigh-tech manufacturing, aerospace, medical devicesGeneral manufacturing, metalworking

While both roles involve CNC machining, Cnc Programmer 5 Axis focuses on programming and designing complex multi-axis operations, whereas Cnc Machinist primarily operates and maintains CNC machines. The programmer role requires advanced software skills and design knowledge, while the machinist role emphasizes hands-on machine operation and setup.

About Phoenix Laser Solutions

Phoenix Laser Solutions is the largest YAG laser weld house in North America, operating five facilities across the Midwest. We specialize in high-precision laser welding, TIG welding, cladding, and advanced repair of tooling and components for Injection Molding, Aerospace, Medical, and High-Value Industrial applications.

Our work combines additive and subtractive manufacturing, often on complex, high-tolerance components where conventional methods fall short. We invest in modern equipment, clean environments, and people who want to master their craft.

We are seeking a5-Axis CNC Programmer / Machinist to own programming, setup, and machining of complex parts with minimal oversight.

Role Overview

This is a hands-on, high-skill position for an experienced machinist who can take a part from print/model to finished component. You will be responsible for programming, setup, prove-out, and optimization of 5-axis machining operations, working closely with engineering and operations.

This role is not button-pushing. We are looking for someone who understands why a process works and how to improve it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program, setup, and operate 5-Axis CNC milling machines independently
  • Create efficient, reliable toolpaths from prints and 3D CAD models
  • Develop and optimize programs using Mastercam (multi-axis strategies required)
  • Select tooling, fixturing, and machining strategies for complex geometries
  • Interpret and apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5) to meet tight tolerances
  • Perform first article inspections and validate processes
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and refine programs for quality and cycle time
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in machining methods and workflows
  • Collaborate with other departments to support repair and manufacturing projects

Required Skills & Capabilities

  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T (ANSI/ASME Y14.5)
  • Advanced CAM programming experience (Mastercam preferred)
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and CAD models
  • Proven ability to machine high-tolerance, multi-surface parts
  • Strong problem-solving skills and process intuition
  • Excellent attention to detail and quality mindset
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of outcomes
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, job-shop environment

Preferred Experience

  • 5+ years CNC machining experience
  • 3+ years programming and running 5-Axis mills
  • Experience with manual machining (Bridgeport or equivalent)
  • CAD/CAM modeling experience (Mastercam or similar)

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay aligned with senior-level skill sets
  • Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • Simple IRA with up to 3% employer match
  • Paid Time Off
  • Clean, climate-controlled shop
  • Annual performance reviews with raise potential
  • Long-term stability and growth in a specialized, high-precision manufacturing environment
