How much do cnc manufacturing engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for cnc manufacturing engineering in the United States is $82,027.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $73,000.00 and $93,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC Manufacturing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC Manufacturing Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, manufacturing processes, and CNC programming, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, CNC machine operation, and certifications such as Six Sigma or LEAN Manufacturing are highly valuable. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for optimizing production and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure efficient manufacturing workflows, high-quality output, and continuous improvement in a competitive production environment.

What is the difference between Cnc Manufacturing Engineering vs Cnc Machining Technician?

AspectCnc Manufacturing EngineeringCnc Machining Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or related field, certifications like CAM or CNC programmingTechnical diploma or certification in CNC machining or manufacturing technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, and process optimization in manufacturing facilities or engineering departmentsOperating CNC machines, setting up, and maintaining equipment on the shop floor
Employer & IndustryManufacturers, engineering firms, and production plantsMachine shops, manufacturing plants, and production facilities

While Cnc Manufacturing Engineers focus on designing processes, optimizing workflows, and improving manufacturing systems, Cnc Machining Technicians handle the day-to-day operation, setup, and maintenance of CNC machines. Both roles are essential in the manufacturing industry but differ in responsibilities, education, and work environment.

What are some common challenges CNC Manufacturing Engineers face when introducing new equipment or processes on the shop floor?

CNC Manufacturing Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new equipment and existing systems, training operators on updated processes, and minimizing production downtime during transitions. Effective communication with cross-functional teams—including machinists, maintenance, and quality assurance—is essential to identify and resolve potential issues early. Additionally, balancing the need for innovation with strict safety and quality standards requires careful planning and adherence to industry best practices.

What is CNC manufacturing engineering?

CNC manufacturing engineering involves designing, developing, and optimizing processes that use Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to produce precision parts and components. Engineers in this field create and improve programs for CNC machines, select appropriate tools and materials, and ensure that manufacturing processes meet quality and efficiency standards. They also troubleshoot issues, maintain equipment, and collaborate with other engineers and production staff to streamline operations. This role is essential in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and electronics, where precision machining is critical.
