Job description

Brown Jig Grinding Co. / BJG Manufacturing Solutions is seeking an experienced Lead CNC Machinist / Shop Foreman to take ownership of our CNC milling department and serve as a hands-on shop leader.

This is NOT an operator position.

We are looking for a highly experienced machinist who can be handed a print and/or STEP file for a new job and independently determine how to manufacture the part—including programming, tooling, workholding, setup, prove-out, inspection and troubleshooting.

Our ideal candidate is strong with Haas CNC mills and has the experience and confidence to keep jobs moving without requiring another programmer or setup person to guide them.

We are a diverse precision job shop, so candidates who bring additional experience with Wire EDM, Zeiss CMM inspection and manual precision grinding are especially valuable to us.

What You’ll Do

  • Program CNC mill jobs from prints, models and STEP files
  • Program, set up, prove out and operate Haas CNC mills
  • Determine tooling, speeds/feeds, workholding and machining strategy
  • Take new jobs from print/model through first good part
  • Perform complex multi-setup machining
  • Troubleshoot programs, tooling, setup and dimensional issues
  • Make offsets and process adjustments to maintain tight tolerances
  • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T
  • Inspect parts and work closely with our inspection/CMM department
  • Improve existing programs and machining processes
  • Help determine the most efficient way to manufacture new work
  • Keep CNC jobs moving according to customer delivery requirements
  • Assist and guide other machinists when needed
  • Help organize workload, priorities and daily shop activities
  • Identify potential problems before they result in scrap or missed deliveries
  • Maintain a high standard of workmanship, organization and accountability

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Applicants MUST have significant hands-on CNC milling/Mastercam experience.

You should be able to independently:

  • Program CNC milling jobs
  • Set up CNC mills from scratch
  • Select tooling and workholding
  • Prove out your own programs
  • Produce a first good part
  • Troubleshoot machining problems
  • Read complex prints and GD&T
  • Hold close tolerances
  • Inspect your own work

Mastercam programming experience is strongly preferred.

Experience with 4-axis or 5-axis machining is a PLUS, but we will consider an exceptional 3/4-axis Haas machinist/programmer with strong job-shop experience.

HUGE PLUS — ADDITIONAL SHOP EXPERIENCE

Because we are a full-service precision job shop, the following experience is a major advantage:

  • Wire EDM setup and operation
  • Zeiss CMM operation and/or programming
  • Manual surface grinding
  • Manual ID/OD grinding
  • Jig grinding
  • Precision grinding and finishing
  • CNC lathe experience
  • Hurco CNC equipment
  • CMM inspection and advanced dimensional inspection
  • Tight-tolerance aerospace or medical work

A candidate who combines strong CNC programming/setup ability with Wire EDM, Zeiss CMM and/or manual grinding experience would be especially valuable to our operation.

We do NOT expect every candidate to have all of these skills. Strong CNC programming and setup ability remains the primary requirement.
