Job description

Overview

A growing structural steel fabrication and manufacturing company is seeking a CNC Machine Operator to support shop production operations. This role is responsible for the setup, operation, and basic maintenance of CNC equipment used to fabricate structural steel components.

The position plays an important role in ensuring precision cutting, drilling, and machining of steel materials while maintaining compliance with project specifications and industry quality standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-focused, and comfortable working in a fast-paced fabrication environment.

The Role

The CNC Machine Operator will operate CNC-controlled fabrication equipment used to process structural steel materials such as beams, plates, channels, and angles. The role requires the ability to interpret shop drawings, monitor machine performance, and maintain accuracy throughout the production process.

Successful candidates will help ensure efficient shop operations by maintaining equipment, monitoring production quality, and collaborating with fabrication teams to meet project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC machinery such as beam lines, drill lines, saws, plate processors, and plasma or oxy-fuel cutting tables.
  • Interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and CNC programs to ensure accurate fabrication.
  • Load raw materials and verify correct material grades, dimensions, and specifications prior to machining.
  • Monitor machine operations to ensure accuracy, quality, and production efficiency.
  • Perform measurements and inspections using precision tools such as calipers, tape measures, and gauges.
  • Make minor program adjustments and offsets to maintain required tolerances.
  • Conduct routine machine inspections and basic maintenance tasks.
  • Identify and report mechanical or programming issues affecting production.
  • Maintain proper material identification and traceability, including heat numbers and mill test reports (MTRs).
  • Coordinate with shop personnel such as fitters, welders, and supervisors to maintain production workflow.
  • Follow safety procedures including proper PPE use and lockout/tagout protocols.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area to support efficient operations.

Safety & Performance Expectations

  • Demonstrate a strong safety mindset and adherence to shop safety policies.
  • Maintain excellent attendance and reliability.
  • Ensure precision and accuracy in fabrication processes.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness within the work area.
  • Work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining quality standards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training or certifications preferred.
  • Experience operating CNC machinery in a structural steel or heavy fabrication environment preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret (or learn to interpret) structural steel shop drawings and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of steel grades, fabrication processes, and material handling practices is beneficial.
  • Experience using measuring tools and maintaining tight machining tolerances.
  • Strong technical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.
  • Experience operating forklifts or overhead cranes preferred.
