- Study blueprints and process documents to determine dimensions, and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and set up requirements.
- Plan and set up machines for unattended, lights-out operations, ensuring tooling, programs, materials, and safety measures are in place for continuous and efficient machining
- Select, fabricate, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines
- Start and observe machine operation to ensure no malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining condition occurs and adjusts programs, tool and or work offsets as required.
- Listen to machines during operation to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and adjust machines to compensate for issues.
- Maintain machines and remove and replace broken or worn machine tools using hand tools.
- Enter commands or load control media into machine controllers to retrieve programmed instructions.
- Measure dimensions of finished workpieces to ensure conformance to specifications using precision instruments.
- Check to ensure that workpieces are properly lubricated and cooled during machine operation.
- Confer with supervisors or programmers to resolve machine malfunctions or production errors or to obtain approval to continue production.
- Lift workpieces to machines manually or with hoist or cranes.
- Comply with safety standards and company policies.
- Assist in setting production standards.
- Accurately record time and piece counts.
- Keep machine(s) and area clean and organized. Remove chips daily or as required.
- Provide training to other machinists as needed.
- Safeguard existing programs and save new programs with proper back-up.
- Generate process documents as needed.
- Request supplies as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
