What are some common challenges CNC Applications Engineers face when supporting clients on new machine installations?

CNC Applications Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting machine parameters to unique client requirements, troubleshooting unexpected programming or tooling issues, and ensuring operators are fully trained on new systems. Additionally, they must communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. These challenges require strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and the ability to work collaboratively with manufacturing teams, engineers, and clients to ensure successful machine integration.

What are CNC Applications Engineers?

CNC Applications Engineers are professionals who specialize in optimizing and supporting the use of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines in manufacturing environments. They work with clients or internal teams to develop efficient machining processes, select appropriate tools, and program CNC equipment to achieve desired production outcomes. Their role often includes troubleshooting, training operators, and enhancing productivity by implementing the latest technologies and techniques. CNC Applications Engineers bridge the gap between engineering design and shop floor operations, ensuring that manufacturing processes are both effective and cost-efficient.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC Applications Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC Applications Engineer, you need strong knowledge of CNC programming, machining processes, mechanical engineering principles, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in CAD/CAM software, G-code, and familiarity with CNC controllers and tooling systems are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to train others help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for optimizing manufacturing processes, ensuring precision, and supporting both customers and production teams effectively.

What Does a CNC Applications Engineer Do?

As a CNC applications engineer, your responsibilities include programming vertical, horizontal, and CNC turning centers for production machining systems, completing a machine assessment for each, and ensuring full customer satisfaction. Some jobs require you to run customer demonstrations, create demo programs for showrooms, and recommend the best machining strategies and efficient ways to process parts. You are also expected to provide accurate cost estimates and write engineering reports. Other duties include setting up custom demos and training customers on safe set-up and operation of their CNC machining centers, lathes, multitasking machines, and more.

  • Anthem PPO and HSA health plans are offered, with excellent dental options.

How You Will Help the Team
The Applications Engineer will support the Center for Manufacturing Advancement (CMA) and the AMPRO Center of Excellence by leading advanced engineering and manufacturing activities. This role is responsible for overseeing complex CNC operations, implementing emerging technologies, and ensuring technical excellence and compliance across projects. The Applications Engineer works closely with machinists and cross-functional partners to ensure successful execution of subtractive manufacturing, inspection, and Industry 4.0 initiatives.

• Program and assist in the setup and operation of CNC equipment, including multi-axis milling machines, mill/turn machines, dual spindle lathes, and tool presetters
• Serve as the technical lead for tooling, work-holding, and CNC technology implementation
• Implement new and emerging technologies into existing and upcoming CMA projects
• Work cross-functionally with CMA team members and machinists to support subtractive manufacturing and inspection activities
• Ensure project compliance with applicable data privacy and quality standards, including ITAR, ISO, ANSI, and related requirements
• Create detailed technical documentation for processes, procedures, and workflows
• Track and maintain CNC-related technical project data
• Support technical activities for new and existing CMA projects
• Attend onsite and offsite stakeholder meetings as required
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Your Knowledge & Expertise
• Associate’s degree or diploma in Precision Machining Technology or equivalent work experience required
• Minimum of 7–10 years of experience setting up and operating complex CNC machining environments
• Extensive experience with multi-axis machining, dual spindle lathes, mill/turn machines, and advanced CNC systems
• Extensive CNC programming experience required
• Extensive CAD/CAM experience and knowledge required
• Strong working knowledge of precision machining principles and practices
• Extensive knowledge of cutting tool applications and material properties
• Experience with work-holding techniques and fixture design
• Knowledge of ancillary machining processes, including EDM and grinding
• Understanding of pre-process, in-process, and post-process inspection methods, including macro variable programming
• Knowledge of additive manufacturing, dimensional inspection, and NDT processes
• Experience with SPC, process monitoring, and data collection systems preferred
• Experience working in ITAR- and ISO-regulated environments preferred
• Proficient with Microsoft Office products
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Customer service–oriented with strong interpersonal skills
• Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
• Valid driver’s license required, with the ability to travel throughout Virginia and occasional out-of-state travel

Physical Requirements

• May lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis

What Makes This Role Different
This role sits at the intersection of advanced manufacturing, applied engineering, and industry partnership. The Applications Engineer will have hands-on influence across a diverse portfolio of projects that support regional industry, workforce development, and applied research. Unlike traditional manufacturing roles, this position offers the opportunity to lead the implementation of emerging technologies, collaborate with a wide range of external stakeholders, and help shape how advanced manufacturing capabilities are developed and deployed through CMA and the AMPRO Center of Excellence. The work is highly technical, collaborative, and impact-driven, with visibility across multiple industries and projects rather than a single production environment.

Equal Opportunity Employer
We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected status.
