What is a CMS engineer?

CMS Engineers are professionals who specialize in developing, configuring, and managing Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla. They ensure that websites and digital platforms are efficient, secure, and user-friendly by customizing CMS features, integrating plugins, and maintaining system updates. CMS Engineers often work closely with designers, content creators, and IT teams to deliver seamless content publishing experiences and optimize site performance. Their expertise is crucial for organizations that rely on dynamic web content and need scalable, easy-to-manage digital solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CMS engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CMS Engineer, you need expertise in web development, content management systems (like WordPress, Drupal, or Sitecore), and an understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, often backed by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CMS-specific plugins, APIs, version control systems (like Git), and sometimes cloud hosting platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the efficient design, customization, and maintenance of robust CMS solutions that meet organizational and user needs.

What are some common challenges CMS engineers face when integrating third-party plugins or extensions?

CMS Engineers often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues, security vulnerabilities, and performance slowdowns when integrating third-party plugins or extensions. Ensuring seamless integration requires thorough testing to avoid conflicts with existing site functionality and maintaining up-to-date versions to mitigate security risks. Additionally, CMS Engineers need to collaborate closely with designers and content teams to ensure the new features align with user experience goals.

Job description

We are looking for a QA Automation Engineer to help design, build, and maintain the automated tests that safeguard the quality, reliability, and performance of our direct-to-consumer digital platforms. This is a fully remote position.
You will be responsible for writing and maintaining automated tests across web and API layers, executing test plans, and partnering with engineers and product teammates to help ship reliable, high-quality releases.
  • As a QA Automation Engineer you will help build and expand the automated testing coverage for our customer-facing web and application experiences, learning and applying quality engineering best practices across the software development lifecycle. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to catch issues early and help protect a great digital experience for prospects and customers.
  • The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, hands-on tester who is eager to grow their automation skills, has a solid foundation in QA fundamentals and at least one modern testing framework, and enjoys turning requirements and edge cases into reliable, repeatable tests.

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
  • Write, maintain, and execute automated tests for web and API layers using modern frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium.
  • Develop and run functional, regression, smoke, and end-to-end test cases.
  • Help build and maintain API test automation (REST and/or GraphQL) to validate services and integrations.
  • Contribute to running automated tests within CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins).
  • Review requirements and user stories to identify test scenarios, edge cases, and acceptance criteria.
  • Triage, document, and track defects, working closely with engineers to reproduce and resolve issues.
  • Perform manual and exploratory testing where automation is not yet in place.
  • Help create and maintain reusable test data, environments, and utilities.
  • Support performance and accessibility testing under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Monitor test results and report on quality, coverage, and release readiness.
  • Participate in code reviews of automated tests and follow established engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with Product, UX/UI, and DevOps teammates to ensure features are testable and meet acceptance criteria.
  • Continuously learn new testing tools, AI-assisted testing capabilities, and best practices to improve quality.
  • Help ensure cross-browser and cross-device compatibility across supported platforms.

Qualifications:
  • 1-3 years of experience in software quality assurance or test automation, including internship, academic, or project experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one automation framework such as Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium.
  • Working knowledge of a programming or scripting language such as JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, Java, or Python.
  • Familiarity with API testing (REST/GraphQL) using tools such as Postman or similar.
  • Understanding of QA fundamentals, the software development lifecycle, and Agile/Scrum practices.
  • Exposure to version control (Git) and defect tracking tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills with attention to detail.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills, and a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
Nice to have:

  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins).
  • ISTQB Certified Tester (Foundation Level) or a similar certification.
  • Familiarity with performance testing (e.g., JMeter, k6) or accessibility standards (WCAG).
  • Experience testing CMS-based or Sitecore websites.
