Position Summary
University Development seeks an exceptional, strategic, and visionary Chief Development Officer for the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. This accomplished and compelling leader will drive transformative philanthropic growth and elevate fundraising efforts for one of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's premier schools. Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development, Schools and Units, the Chief Development Officer serves as the School's senior advancement leader, providing strategic direction and oversight for all fundraising and advancement activities.
In close partnership with the Dean and University Development leadership, the Chief Development Officer will design and execute comprehensive strategies to expand philanthropic support across principal, major, annual, and planned giving, while also strengthening alumni engagement, external relations, and the School's overall culture of philanthropy.
The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is a nationally recognized leader in media, communications, and journalism education. Founded in 1924, Hussman combines a rich legacy with a forward-looking approach, preparing more than 1,500 students each year through hands-on learning and cutting-edge research.
With top programs in advertising and public relations, journalism, media and technology, and communication studies, Hussman blends academic rigor with real-world experience. Its renowned faculty, innovative centers, and global alumni network drive impact across media, business, and public life.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master's or Bachelor's and 0-2 years' experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* 7+ years of progressive advancement/fundraising experience. 
* 5+ years of strong experience leading large, high-performing teams 
* Proven track record of securing major and principal gifts 
* Experience leading comprehensive advancement programs 
* Demonstrated ability to design and execute fundraising strategy 
* Ability to operate effectively in a complex, matrixed organization 
* Strong financial and data acumen (campaigns, forecasting, metrics) 
* Exceptional relationship-building and communication skills and executive presence 
* Experience using CRM systems
* Willingness to travel and work flexible hours
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* An advanced degree
* Experience leading a comprehensive campaign 
* Experience in higher education advancement 
* Experience managing volunteer boards and foundation boards 
* Familiarity with institutional priorities and academic environments 
* Experience securing principal gifts ($5M+)
