Job Title: CMM Inspector
Job Description
The CMM Inspector performs precise dimensional and visual inspections on machined components, with a strong focus on first article and in-process inspections. This role uses Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and quality control procedures to ensure products meet engineering specifications and quality standards. The inspector supports manufacturing by verifying product conformance, identifying defects, and assisting with problem solving throughout the production process.
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints and engineering specifications to determine required materials, surface finishes, tolerances, and dimensions.
- Inspect work-in-progress and first article parts for dimensional and attribute conformance using CMMs and other precision measuring equipment.
- Follow established inspection procedures to verify product conformance, selecting and using appropriate measuring and testing equipment.
- Perform CMM setup, operation, and inspection activities, including first article inspections on machined parts.
- Solve dimensional calculations and perform necessary measurements during routine inspections to verify compliance with specifications.
- Examine materials and products for surface defects such as cracks, pits, incomplete welds, and other nonconformities.
- Compare finished products to parts lists, sample models, and engineering drawings to confirm all required features and dimensions are present and correct.
- Identify and reject defective parts, clearly marking the type of defect on the part, container, or inspection tag as appropriate.
- Follow documented procedures for the disposition of non-conforming products and ensure proper handling of rejected items.
- Record inspection findings and discrepancies accurately on inspection reports and submit discrepancy reports to the Quality Supervisor for review and action.
- Perform final inspection procedures to ensure completed parts and assemblies meet all quality and dimensional requirements before release.
- Assist manufacturing personnel with in-process inspections, providing feedback and support to resolve dimensional and quality-related issues.
- Collaborate with the quality and production teams to maintain consistent inspection standards and continuous improvement of inspection processes.
- Perform other related duties, tasks, and projects as assigned to support the quality control function and overall production goals.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience in quality inspection within a manufacturing or machining environment.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and engineering drawings, including understanding of materials, surface finishes, and tolerances.
- Strong knowledge and practical application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience operating Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), with specific experience on Zeiss CMM equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to perform first article inspections on machined parts using CMM and other inspection tools.
- Solid understanding of quality control principles, inspection procedures, and documentation requirements.
- Ability to perform dimensional calculations and apply basic math and measurement concepts during inspections.
- Attention to detail and accuracy when identifying defects, recording measurements, and documenting nonconformities.
- Capability to follow established procedures for handling non-conforming products and reporting discrepancies.
- Effective communication skills to report findings and collaborate with quality and manufacturing teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with CMM programming in addition to CMM operation.
- Experience in a precision machining or metalworking environment.
- Familiarity with a range of inspection and measuring tools beyond CMMs, such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
- Ability to support problem solving activities within the manufacturing process related to dimensional and quality issues.
- Strong organizational skills for managing inspection documentation and reports.
- Comfort working within a structured quality system and adhering to standardized inspection procedures.
