Position: Electro-Mechanical Service Technician

Reports to: Technical Services Lead

Position Summary: The Electro-Mechanical Service Technician is responsible for the field installation and maintenance of CMD equipment. The Technician ensures customer satisfaction by overseeing equipment setup, providing operator and maintenance training, and responding to ongoing service needs. As part of a team of Technicians, the employee conducts in-house assessments of completed machinery before shipping and final inspections and offers sales support when technical representation is essential. The geographical scope of responsibility extends worldwide.

This is an exciting opportunity for a technician to learn about the capital equipment manufacturing industry and grow within CMD.

Electro-Mechanical Service Technician Essential Functions:

  • Oversees equipment installation and start-up in customers’ manufacturing facilities.
  • Provides training on-site to ensure ongoing production and customer satisfaction post departure.
  • Conducts routine service trips to customer facilities to troubleshoot issues.
  • Maintains comprehensive notes during service trips and disseminates trip reports to relevant stakeholders.
  • Applies analytical skills to identify causes of failures and malfunctions. Provides recommendations and implements corrective actions.
  • Conducts equipment check-out before shipping, ensuring machinery meets customer’s specifications before leaving CMD.
  • Provides technical phone support to CMD customers. Documents customer phone activity in the ERP system. Follows up with customers to verify resolution of problems.
  • On a rotational basis, provides 24-hour technical assistance to customers, through after hours support function.
  • Facilitates the sales effort when technical assistance is required, (e.g., in-house machinery demonstrations).
  • Assists with equipment operation at national and international trade shows.
  • Assists with R&D and other special projects as required.
  • Provides technical advice and assistance to other departments.
  • Must be proficient with equipment operation including programs, troubleshooting, maintenance, film processing and applications.
  • Responsible for mentoring less-experienced service technicians, as required, by the supervisor.
  • Visibly supports continuous improvement activities. Participates in rapid improvement events. Supports transition activities, as required.
  • Maintains an open mind throughout the change process. Works with others to continuously fuel improvement throughout the company.
  • Responsible for own safety. Practices only safe work habits and ensures all safety rules are followed. Responsible for keeping area clean and organized to ensure safe working conditions.

Electro-Mechanical Service Technician Competencies:

  • Strong electrical and/or mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to learn technical specifications of CMD equipment.
  • Familiarity with 24/7 manufacturing, preferably in plastics or paper.
  • Ability to work under stress, think creatively, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Willingness to travel globally for extended periods (2-3 weeks).
  • Collaborative attitude with colleagues, customers, and vendors.
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a U.S. Passport.
  • Must have a current, valid driver's license.

Electro-Mechanical Service Technician Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in Electro-Mechanical Technology or equivalent education, training, or experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems and troubleshooting.

Work Environment: CMD is located in Appleton, WI. Our three facilities operate by secure entry, are well lit, air temperature controlled for comfort, and clean with low noise. Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods while working at a desk or computer.
  • Capacity to use standard office equipment such as computer, telephone, and videoconferencing.
  • Ability to navigate manufacturing floor environment, which may include walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods.
  • Physical movement is required to inspect, touch, bend, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or twist in the equipment manufacturing process.
  • Capacity to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, ear protection, and hard hat as needed.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to moderate levels of noise, vibration, and varying temperatures in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to follow health and safety guidelines and protocols including emergency procedures.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. unassisted; use tools to lift heavy equipment and assist others with lifting.
  • Regular, predictable attendance is required.

Status: Full-time, nonexempt. Rotating on-call.

Travel: Extensive travel may be required, up to 50%. Generally, it is predictable and scheduled. CMD pays competitive travel incentives.
