Many cloud engineers are involved in other aspects of information technology, such as overseeing SAP projects. Strong communication skills are required to communicate with clients to understand their needs so that you can create effective solutions for them. You work closely with the entire development team to create a work plan and timeline for deliverables on a project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cloud engineer?

To thrive as a Cloud Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, networking, and cloud computing platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect. Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you work effectively across technical and business teams. These skills ensure efficient cloud infrastructure deployment, robust security, and seamless operations critical for modern organizations.

What are some common challenges cloud engineers face when migrating legacy systems to the cloud?

Cloud Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring data integrity during migration, minimizing downtime, and addressing compatibility issues between legacy applications and cloud platforms. Additionally, they must plan for security and compliance requirements while optimizing costs and performance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including security, application owners, and business stakeholders, is crucial to successfully navigate these complexities and deliver a seamless transition.

Job description

HNI Corporation is a global family of brands for the workplace and home dedicated to enhancing the spaces where we live, work, and gather. We pride ourselves on fostering an environment where we make a positive impact on others, upholding our beliefs in integrity, inclusion and belonging.

The Cybersecurity Architect is a senior technical leader responsible for designing, governing, and evolving the enterprise cybersecurity architecture for a publicly traded manufacturing organization operating through a shared services IT model. Supporting multiple operating companies, cloud platforms, enterprise applications, manufacturing environments, and external business partners, this role develops security architectures that enable business growth while protecting critical systems, data, and intellectual property.

Reporting to Cybersecurity leadership, the Cybersecurity Architect establishes enterprise security standards, develops long-term architectural roadmaps, and partners closely with Enterprise Architecture, Infrastructure, Cloud Engineering, Enterprise Applications, Digital Workplace, and Software Engineering teams to ensure security is embedded throughout the technology ecosystem.

A significant focus of this role is enterprise identity and access management, including modern authentication, identity governance, privileged access, federation, and secure collaboration with internal users, subsidiaries, customers, suppliers, dealers, and other external partners. The role also contributes to cloud security, Zero Trust initiatives, AI governance, application security, and modernization efforts supporting legacy technologies.

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

They have extensive experience designing secure identity, cloud, and application architectures within large, complex organizations and understand how to balance strong security controls with business usability. They are comfortable guiding technology modernization efforts, integrating newly acquired or diverse operating environments, and establishing governance for emerging technologies such as AI. Most importantly, they excel at building security architectures that enable the business to operate confidently while reducing risk, supporting regulatory obligations, and creating a scalable foundation for future growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Define enterprise security principles, architectural standards, and technical reference architectures.
  • Establish long-term security technology roadmaps aligned with business strategy and enterprise architecture.

Identity & Access Management Architecture

  • Design enterprise identity and access management architectures supporting employees, contractors, subsidiaries, customers, suppliers, dealers, and other external business partners.
  • Establish enterprise standards for authentication, authorization, identity lifecycle management, federation, and privileged access.
  • Design scalable identity architectures supporting hybrid cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Support implementation of modern identity governance, adaptive authentication, passwordless technologies, and Zero Trust principles.
  • Partner with infrastructure and application teams to modernize legacy identity solutions while minimizing business disruption.

Cloud & Hybrid Security

  • Develop security architectures supporting enterprise cloud environments and hybrid infrastructures.
  • Partner with cloud engineering teams to establish secure identity, access, networking, and workload protection strategies.
  • Develop security guidance for SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS platforms.

  • Evaluate cloud security controls against enterprise risk and compliance requirements.

Security Architecture for Enterprise Applications

  • Partner with Enterprise Applications and Software Engineering teams to ensure security is incorporated into enterprise application design.
  • Develop architectural guidance for secure integrations, APIs, middleware, enterprise platforms, and data exchanges.
  • Review application architectures and technical designs for alignment with enterprise security standards.
  • Support modernization of legacy applications while maintaining appropriate security controls throughout transition periods.

Third-Party & External Access Security

  • Design secure architectures supporting collaboration with external business partners while maintaining appropriate separation of enterprise resources.
  • Establish security patterns for controlled access to shared systems, applications, and data.
  • Partner with business leaders to develop practical solutions supporting suppliers, dealers, consultants, customers, and strategic partners.
  • Evaluate third-party integration approaches from both security and operational perspectives.

AI Security & Technology Governance

  • Participate in enterprise governance initiatives related to artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
  • Develop security principles supporting responsible implementation of AI-enabled business capabilities.
  • Evaluate security, privacy, intellectual property, and regulatory considerations associated with AI technologies.
  • Partner with Enterprise Architecture, Legal, Compliance, and Information Governance teams to establish enterprise AI security standards.
  • Monitor emerging risks associated with generative AI, intelligent automation, and evolving technology platforms.

Legacy Modernization & Technology Transformation

  • Develop security strategies supporting modernization of legacy applications, infrastructure, and operational technologies.
  • Recommend approaches that improve security while recognizing operational constraints and business continuity requirements.
  • Partner with Infrastructure and Enterprise Architecture teams to prioritize modernization initiatives based on enterprise risk.
  • Support long-term migration strategies toward modern security architectures.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Develop enterprise cybersecurity standards, technical policies, and architectural guidance.
  • Support enterprise risk assessments, technology reviews, and security governance activities.
  • Partner with Internal Audit, Risk Management, Legal, and Compliance teams to support regulatory requirements.

  • Recommend strategic investments supporting enterprise security maturity.
  • Develop multi-year cybersecurity architecture roadmaps.

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in Information Technology or Cybersecurity.
  • Significant experience designing enterprise cybersecurity architectures.
  • Experience supporting identity and access management within complex enterprise environments.
  • Experience with cloud security architecture and hybrid infrastructure.
