How much do cloud automation engineer permanent jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for cloud automation engineer permanent in the United States is $107,126.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $86,500.00 and $123,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a Cloud Automation Engineer?

A Cloud Automation Engineer is a technology professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining automated solutions within cloud environments. Their primary focus is to streamline cloud infrastructure management by utilizing automation tools, scripts, and orchestration frameworks. This role involves tasks like automating deployments, monitoring cloud resources, optimizing costs, and ensuring security compliance. Cloud Automation Engineers work closely with development and operations teams to enable efficient, reliable, and repeatable processes in cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

A senior Cloud Automation Engineer with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and expertise in tools like Terraform, Ansible, or AWS can potentially earn $500,000 annually, especially in high-demand markets or with leadership responsibilities. Such roles often require specialized skills, a strong track record, and sometimes involve performance bonuses or stock options.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cloud Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cloud Automation Engineer, you need strong expertise in cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), scripting languages (like Python or Bash), and infrastructure-as-code concepts, often supported by a degree in computer science or related certifications. Familiarity with automation tools (like Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation), CI/CD pipelines, and cloud security frameworks is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure efficient, secure, and scalable cloud environments that support business goals and innovation.

What is the difference between Cloud Automation Engineer Permanent vs Cloud Infrastructure Engineer?

AspectCloud Automation Engineer PermanentCloud Infrastructure Engineer
CertificationsCloud certifications (AWS, Azure, GCP), automation toolsCloud certifications, networking, infrastructure skills
Work EnvironmentDevOps teams, automation projects, cloud platformsInfrastructure setup, network management, cloud environments
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, cloud service providers, enterprisesIT departments, cloud service providers, enterprise IT

The main difference is that Cloud Automation Engineers focus on automating cloud processes and deploying infrastructure as code, while Cloud Infrastructure Engineers design and manage the underlying cloud infrastructure. Both roles require cloud certifications and work in similar environments, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Is AI replacing cloud engineers?

AI is automating certain tasks within cloud engineering, such as infrastructure provisioning and monitoring, but it is not replacing cloud engineers entirely. Cloud engineers are needed to design, implement, and manage complex cloud solutions, and their expertise remains essential for integrating AI tools effectively and ensuring security and compliance.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior cloud automation engineers with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and expertise in tools like Terraform, Ansible, or AWS often earn $300,000 or more annually. High-level roles in cloud engineering, especially in large organizations or with specialized skills, can reach this compensation level. Salary depends on factors such as location, industry, and individual skill set.

What are some common challenges faced by Cloud Automation Engineers, and how can they be addressed in a permanent role?

Cloud Automation Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex multi-cloud environments, ensuring security compliance during automation, and keeping up with rapidly evolving cloud technologies. In a permanent role, these challenges can be addressed by developing strong collaboration with security and operations teams, adopting standardized tools and frameworks, and participating in ongoing training. Building robust documentation and automating regular audits also help maintain reliability and compliance in cloud infrastructure.

What jobs will survive automation?

Cloud Automation Engineers are likely to continue being in demand because their roles involve complex problem-solving, designing automation workflows, and managing cloud infrastructure, which are difficult to fully automate. Jobs that require creativity, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills, such as system architecture, cybersecurity, and technical consulting, are also more resistant to automation. Developing expertise in tools like scripting languages and earning relevant certifications can help professionals adapt to automation trends.
