What is a clinical helper?

Clinical helpers are support staff who assist healthcare professionals such as doctors and nurses in clinical settings like hospitals, clinics, or care facilities. Their responsibilities often include tasks such as preparing examination rooms, helping with patient mobility, taking vital signs, and ensuring that supplies are stocked. While they do not typically provide direct medical care, their role is essential in maintaining efficient workflow and supporting patient comfort and safety. Clinical helpers may also handle some administrative duties, depending on the healthcare environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a clinical helper?

To thrive as a Clinical Helper, you need a basic understanding of healthcare procedures, patient care techniques, and often a high school diploma or equivalent with relevant on-the-job training. Familiarity with health information systems, basic medical equipment, and compliance with safety protocols is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, reliability, and attention to detail help build trust with patients and support effective teamwork. These attributes are crucial for ensuring efficient clinical operations and maintaining a safe, supportive environment for patients and staff.

What are some common challenges faced by clinical helpers when supporting diverse patient populations?

Clinical Helpers often work with patients from various backgrounds, ages, and with different health needs, which can present challenges in communication and understanding individual care preferences. Adapting to each patient's unique requirements while maintaining a compassionate and professional approach is essential. Additionally, Clinical Helpers must stay organized and manage their time efficiently, especially in busy healthcare settings where priorities can shift rapidly. Building strong collaboration with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff also helps address these challenges and ensures the best patient care.

Job description

What you'll be part of

Garner is on a mission to transform the U.S. healthcare system — and we're the only proven player doing exactly that. We partner with employers to redesign how healthcare works: applying 550+ proprietary clinical metrics across 80+ specialties to a dataset of 320M+ patients to identify the best-performing doctors, then using compelling incentives to steer members to the care that helps them get healthier, faster.

The result is a rare "win win" — better care and lower costs for both members and employers. In just five years, our work has helped over 2.5 million people access higher-quality care and saved $1B in healthcare costs. We recently raised our Series E and have doubled five years running. If you've ever wanted your work to solve a problem that touches every person in this country, this is the opportunity to do exactly that. You'd be joining a team fundamentally reimagining healthcare in the U.S. — and using AI to scale that impact further and faster than anyone else can.

About the role:

We are seeking an exceptional Clinical Researcher to join our Clinical Research Team. This role will report to the Director of Healthcare Research. You will be essential in helping develop and maintain Garner's proprietary claims-based physician performance measures. You will help review academic clinical literature and work with clinical experts to understand high-quality, high-value care across a variety of specialties and identify exceptional clinicians.

Where you will work:

This role is open to remote candidates across the U.S. For candidates based in New York City, the position follows a hybrid schedule with in-office work required Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week.

What you will do:
  • Conduct literature reviews to help develop and refine metrics for a range of medical conditions and procedures
  • Create and validate measures using proprietary technical and statistical tools
  • Maintain a library of documentation for internal and external stakeholders
  • Work closely with clinical experts
  • Collaborate with product, data science, and engineering teams to support new product development, figuring out creative ways to use the metrics we have developed to save the US healthcare system money and help improve quality of care for patients
The ideal candidate has:
  • Minimum 1 year (preferably 2+ years) working with health insurance claims data or electronic health record (EHR) data
  • Working knowledge of how to utilize ICD and CPT codes, as well as their limitations
  • Bachelor's degree required. Masters degree or above in public health, biostatistics, epidemiology, or related fields preferred
  • Strong biostatistics and epidemiological background required
  • Basic coding experience (SQL, Python, Stata, R, or SAS) required
  • Strong interest in healthcare and clinical best practices research
  • An aptitude to learn new technologies and tools quickly
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A desire to be a part of a high-performing, mission-driven team that operates with intense urgency, a strong sense of individual accountability, and a commitment to authentic feedback

This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-growing company in a transformative role, helping shape the future of healthcare.

Please note: we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

What you'll get here:

You'll work on problems that matter, at a company working to change healthcare at scale. You'll work at the intersection of AI and systemic healthcare reform, where the problems we solve are as interesting and compelling as the mission.

At Garner, you'll take on real, ambitious problems with real ownership and autonomy, alongside exceptional, principles-based people who genuinely want you to win. It's demanding by design. You'll be challenged to stretch beyond what you thought possible and receive consistent coaching to help you grow and do the best work of your career. This isn't the right fit for everyone, and that's intentional. The people here are driven by what's at stake for real people, and that's what gives our intensity its purpose.

Compensation Transparency:

The target salary range for this position is $90,000 - $100,000. Individual compensation for this role will depend on various factors, including qualifications, skills, and applicable laws. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible to participate in our equity incentive and competitive benefits plans, including but not limited to: flexible PTO, Medical/Dental/Vision plan options, 401(k), Teladoc Health and more.
