Job description

Nurse Extern- Nurse Education

Description:

Nurse Externs follow the same employment guidelines as other staff e.g. attendance, tardiness, etc.

Nurse Externs are required to work 24 hours (2 shifts) per pay period

Nurse Externs report to the Charge Nurse at the beginning of the shift; the Charge Nurse is responsible for seeking out a preceptor based on learning opportunities available

Nurse Externs are actively engaged with the assigned preceptor to provide patient care including assessments, assistance with ADLs, toileting, feeding, etc.; however,ย  Nurse Externs may complete skills in which they have previously been checked/signed off on by their nursing instructor; must provide copy of skills checklists

For the first 6 months of the program, Nurse Externs rotate through the following areas:ย 

  • ICU
  • IMCU
  • CPU
  • 5 North
  • 6 North
  • 7 North
  • NET
  • ED

The last 6 months of the program the Nurse Extern is assigned to the unit of their choice (if possible)

Experience/Qualifications:

Student nurses can be hired as Nurse Externs:

ADN:ย  upon completion of Nursing Fundamentals

BSN:ย  during senior/last year of the nursing program
