Job description

Adjunct Dental Hygiene Clinical Instructor

The Adjunct Dental Hygiene Clinical Instructor provides clinical instruction and supervision to students enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program. The instructor facilitates student learning in clinical settings, evaluates student performance, promotes patient safety, and supports the mission of the community college by maintaining high educational and professional standards.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Supervise and instruct dental hygiene students during clinical laboratory and patient care experiences.
  • Demonstrate and reinforce proper clinical techniques, infection control procedures, patient management skills, and professional conduct.
  • Evaluate student clinical performance using established program competencies and grading criteria.
  • Provide constructive feedback to assist students in developing clinical skills and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ensure compliance with program policies, accreditation standards, OSHA regulations, HIPAA requirements, and state dental practice laws.
  • Monitor patient care activities to ensure quality treatment and patient safety.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, clinical competencies, evaluations, and grades.
  • Collaborate with full-time faculty regarding student progress, remediation plans, and curriculum implementation.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development activities, and program assessment activities as requested.
  • Assist in maintaining clinical equipment, supplies, and instructional materials.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that supports student success.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist students during clinical procedures for extended periods.
  • Ability to demonstrate dental hygiene techniques and operate clinical equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move supplies and equipment as needed.

Work Schedule

  • Part-time, adjunct position.
  • Schedule may include daytime, evening, or weekend clinical assignments based on program needs.
  • Hours vary by semester and enrollment.
Qualifications & Degree Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in Dental Hygiene from an accredited institution.
  • Current unrestricted North Carolina Dental Hygiene License.
  • Current CPR certification for healthcare providers.
  • Minimum of three years of recent clinical dental hygiene experience.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and mentor students in a clinical setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Dental Hygiene, Education, or a related field.
  • Prior teaching, clinical instruction, or preceptorship experience.
  • Experience with electronic dental records and educational technology.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards established by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
  • Experience working in a community college environment.
