Job description

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a Climbing Wall Lead Staff to join our team!
The YMCA focuses on empowering people in all forms, by improving health and well-being and inspiring action in and across our neighborhoods.
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
As a Climbing Wall Lead Staff, you will provide supervision, leadership, and motivation for participants in climbing wall programming under the supervision of the Program Director. Individuals in this role are responsible for providing a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Key Responsibilities:
  • You will prepare lesson plans with a natural progression appropriate to the age and ability of the participant.
  • You will lead and assist participants in skill development and activities.
  • You will enforce all safety rules and regulations at the climbing wall, while creating a fun and exciting environment.
  • Assist and support leading the climbing wall programs under the directions of program director.
  • Assist in recruiting and leading volunteers to assist with programming support.
  • Create and maintain class schedules and rosters.

Are you a good fit?
  • You are a high school graduate or equivalent (preferred).
  • You have one year or more of related experience rock climbing.
  • You are committed to valuing and promoting diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • You are able to demonstrate excellent organizational, interpersonal, and problem solving skills.
  • You have experience or education in recreation, physical education, or related field. You are belay certified.
  • You have a positive attitude and previous experience with youth and diverse populations.
  • You have knowledge and skills in rock climbing and related equipment, and the ability to instruct participants in techniques.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications (preferred).
  • Willing to complete Child Abuse Prevention training on first day and other online or in-person training as required.
  • Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks (in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act).

Wage: $18.24 to $18.87 per hour, depending on qualifications
Hours: Part-Time, Up to 25 hours per week

Position Summary
Provides supervision, leadership, and motivation for participants in climbing wall programming under the supervision of the Program Director. Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
• Prepare lesson plans for assigned areas of responsibility.
• Responsible for the implementation of the activity program.
• Plan, lead, and participate in program activities at the climbing wall.
• Lead participants in the climbing wall program.
• Keep parents informed of performance and changes pertaining to their child's classes.
• Assist and support leading the climbing wall programs under the directions of program director.
• Assist in recruiting and leading volunteers to assist with programming support.
• Track daily class attendance.
• Create and maintain class schedules and rosters.
• Return phone calls and emails and track appropriately.
• Meet performance measurement through annual giving, major gifts, and/or endowment by telling the Y story and raising charitable dollars to fulfill our mission.
• Embraces and actively promotes an inclusive and equitable work environment.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
• High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
• One year or more of related experience rock climbing.
• Experience or education in recreation, physical education, or related field.
• Belay certified.
• Previous experience working with diverse populations, preferably in a rock climbing setting.
• Ability to instruct climbing wall classes.
• Demonstrate excellent organizational, interpersonal, and problem solving skills.
• CPR, First Aid, AED certifications preferred.
• Complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day. Complete other online and in-person training as required.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
• Regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
• Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move a higher amount.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Occasionally may need to plan and participate in programming outdoors.
