Climbing instructors are trained professionals who teach people how to climb safely, whether indoors at climbing gyms or outdoors on natural rock formations. They provide instruction on climbing techniques, equipment use, safety protocols, and belaying. Instructors often tailor their guidance to suit different skill levels, from beginners to advanced climbers. They may also hold certifications from recognized climbing organizations to ensure they meet industry safety and teaching standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a climbing instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Climbing Instructor, you need technical climbing skills, knowledge of safety protocols, and relevant certifications such as those from the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) or similar organizations. Familiarity with climbing equipment, belay devices, and safety systems is essential, along with first aid or wilderness medicine certification. Effective communication, patience, and the ability to motivate and reassure clients are vital soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are important to ensure client safety, promote learning, and create a positive and supportive environment for climbers of all abilities.

What are some common challenges faced by climbing instructors when teaching beginners, and how can they be addressed?

Job description

Multnomah Athletic Club is more than Portland's most legendary hub of sports and socializing. It's like a small city unto itself. Where else can you find four restaurants, three pools, a climbing gym, state-of-the-art studios and fitness suite, a complex of racquet sport courts, massage offerings, a boutique, plus a grand ballroom and variety of events spaces all in one place? To say that every employee of MAC has room to move is an understatement almost as big as MAC's 600,000 square feet of recreational possibilities.
Want a career with a future? A campus worth exploring? A one-of-a-kind community on which you can have a direct impact? MAC is all of those things and more.
The Role
Are you passionate about dance and ready to inspire others with your moves? We're on the lookout for a dynamic part-time Recreational Dance Instructor to lead our recreational dance classes and camps. You'll be responsible for planning and conducting engaging dance classes and camps that not only meet our members' needs but also exceed industry standards and program guidelines. If you're bursting with creativity, energy, and a love for teaching, we want you to be part of our team!
This is a part-time, fully on-site position. We're looking for someone with a wide range of dance abilities and knowledge across various disciplines with specific experience in some or all of the following genres: Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, & Ballet.
What You'll Do
  • Design & Teach Classes: Plan and conduct exciting recreational dance classes and camps, ensuring each session is filled with energy and creativity.
  • Create Choreography: Prepare music and choreography in advance, ensuring it aligns perfectly with the class/camp theme and level.
  • Be a Role Model: Create a welcoming environment with a thorough warm-up and emphasis on proper technique for safe execution.
  • Develop New Skills & Adapt to Capabilities: Keep things fresh by incorporating variety, creativity, and appropriate modifications to meet the needs of all class members.
  • Continue Professional Development: Stay up-to-date with industry trends and participate in professional development opportunities to enhance your skills.

What You'll Bring
  • Teaching & Performing Experience: Minimum one year of experience teaching recreational dance in a professional setting. Some performing experience would be a plus.
  • Teamwork & Communication Skills: Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to connect with diverse groups.
  • Dynamic Energy: A positive, enthusiastic attitude that lights up the dance floor and motivates others.
  • Adaptability & Flexibility: Ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You'll Gain
At Multnomah Athletic Club, we believe in taking care of our team members. We offer a wide range of benefits to ensure your well-being, both inside and outside the club. Here's what's in it for you:
  • Full-time employees: Enjoy medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Facility access: Free access to our exercise room and classes, climbing gym, and pools.
  • Convenience: Free parking and discounted public transportation passes.
  • Retirement: Participate in our 401(k) program with an employer match.
  • Well-being: Access our Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Perks: Enjoy discounts on club services and meals.

If you're ready to share your passion for dance and inspire others to move, we want to hear from you! Apply now and let's dance our way to success together. #LI-Onsite
