Climate Modelling information

What is climate modelling?

Climate modelling is the use of computer-based mathematical models to simulate the Earth's climate system, including the atmosphere, oceans, land surface, and ice. These models help scientists understand past, present, and future climate conditions by analyzing interactions between various components of the climate. Climate models are essential tools for predicting future climate changes, assessing the impact of human activities, and informing policy decisions related to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

What are some typical collaborative projects that climate modellers work on with other scientists?

Climate modellers frequently collaborate with meteorologists, oceanographers, data scientists, and policy experts to create comprehensive simulations and forecasts. These joint projects might include developing regional climate impact assessments, evaluating mitigation strategies, or contributing to international reports like those from the IPCC. Working in interdisciplinary teams allows climate modellers to integrate diverse data sets and perspectives, enhancing the accuracy and relevance of their models. Collaboration is essential for translating complex climate data into actionable insights for stakeholders and policymakers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a climate modeller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Climate Modeller, you need a strong background in atmospheric sciences, mathematics, and programming, typically supported by an advanced degree in climate science, meteorology, or a related field. Proficiency with climate modelling software (such as WRF or CESM), data analysis tools (like Python, MATLAB, or R), and experience with high-performance computing environments are essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help translate complex model outputs into actionable insights. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing accurate climate projections that inform policy decisions and scientific understanding.

What is the difference between Climate Modelling vs Climate Data Analysis?

AspectClimate ModellingClimate Data Analysis
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Environmental Science, Meteorology, or related fields; programming skillsBachelor's or Master's in Data Science, Statistics, or related fields; strong analytical skills
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, government agencies; computational and simulation workData centers, research institutions, consulting firms; data processing and interpretation
Employer & Industry UsageClimate research, environmental agencies, academiaEnvironmental consulting, research, policy analysis

Climate Modelling involves creating simulations to predict climate patterns using complex models, while Climate Data Analysis focuses on interpreting existing climate data to identify trends and insights. Both roles require strong analytical skills but differ in their approach—modeling emphasizes simulation, whereas data analysis emphasizes data interpretation.

Job description

There's no pledge more important than the one we make to look after our environment, and we're committed to helping you do exactly that. Join GHD as we strive to ensure a sustainable future for our communities and the world we live in.

Become part of our global network of skilled engineers, scientists, auditors, planners and environmental specialists, all working together to leave this world better than we found it.

Who Are We Looking For?

GHD is seeking an Air & Climate Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) to join our Western Canada Air, Noise & Compliance team based in Vancouver, BC. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer to build technical consulting experience in air quality, climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, regulatory compliance, and environmental approvals while working alongside experienced professionals across Western Canada and GHD's broader North American network.

The successful candidate will support project delivery, technical analysis, reporting, regulatory review, field work, and client-focused solutions for industrial, municipal, energy, infrastructure, and development projects. This role is suited to someone who is curious, detail-oriented, collaborative, and motivated to grow their career in environmental consulting.

Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position will see you involved in:
  • Supporting air quality, climate change, greenhouse gas, and regulatory compliance projects across British Columbia and Western Canada.

  • Assisting with air quality compliance reporting, emissions inventories, greenhouse gas quantification, climate-related assessments, and regulatory submissions.

  • Supporting air quality impact assessments for environmental approvals, permits, and project development applications.

  • Assisting with atmospheric dispersion modelling, data management, calculations, technical reviews, and preparation of figures, tables, and supporting documentation.

  • Conducting research and interpreting relevant provincial and federal environmental regulations, standards, guidance documents, and permitting requirements.

  • Supporting ambient air quality monitoring, odour assessments, field investigations, site visits, and contractor coordination as required.

  • Preparing technical memoranda, reports, proposals, work plans, and client deliverables for review by senior staff.

  • Collaborating with engineers, scientists, project managers, and technical specialists across GHD's Air, Noise & Compliance and Sustainability teams.

  • Participating in quality, health, safety, and environmental processes in accordance with GHD standards.

  • Contributing to a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team culture while actively developing technical and consulting skills.

What You Will Bring to the Team
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training, or eligible to register as an E.I.T. with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).

  • Relevant co-op, internship, academic, or early-career experience in air quality, climate change, environmental consulting, emissions reporting, regulatory compliance, or related environmental engineering work.

  • Interest in air quality modelling, greenhouse gas emissions, decarbonization, climate resilience, and environmental approvals.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; experience with data analysis, GIS, AERMOD, CALPUFF, emissions calculations, or environmental databases is considered an asset.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to organize technical information clearly and accurately.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work collaboratively in a team environment, and take initiative in learning new technical areas.

  • Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel for field work or client/project requirements, as needed.
