Climate Data Science information

What is climate data science?

Climate data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses statistical, computational, and analytical methods to gather, process, and interpret data related to the Earth's climate. Professionals in this area work with large datasets from sources like satellites, weather stations, and climate models to identify trends, make predictions, and inform policy decisions. Their work supports research on climate change, helps organizations adapt to environmental shifts, and contributes to the development of sustainable solutions.

How do climate data scientists typically collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to address complex environmental challenges?

Climate data scientists frequently work alongside meteorologists, ecologists, policy experts, and software engineers to analyze and interpret large datasets related to climate patterns and environmental impacts. Collaboration is key, as insights from different disciplines help ensure that the models and analyses are both scientifically robust and actionable for real-world decision making. Team members often hold regular meetings to discuss data sources, share findings, and align on research goals, which helps to bridge knowledge gaps and foster innovative solutions to climate-related problems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a climate data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Climate Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, a background in statistics or environmental science, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with climate modeling tools, geospatial analysis software (like ArcGIS or QGIS), and data visualization platforms is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for translating complex data into actionable insights. These skills enable accurate interpretation of climate data, effective teamwork, and impactful communication of findings to inform climate policy and research.

Job description

Build the future, spark innovation and align your career with purpose.
McKinstry is innovating the waste and climate harm out of the built environment and creating lasting impact. Together, we're building a thriving planet.
Buildings are a leading contributor to the climate crisis, generating nearly 40% of total global energy-related carbon emissions. We're making a lasting impact on our industry and within our communities by addressing the climate, affordability and equity crises through:
  • renewables and energy services
  • engineering and design
  • construction and facility services

To get where we're going, we need big thinkers, problem solvers and collaborative mindsets. Does that sound like you?
The Opportunity with McKinstry
McKinstry is transforming its core enterprise platforms-and we're looking for an Enterprise Applications Development Manager to lead the teams making it happen.
In this role, you'll manage and develop engineers across McKinstry's ERP and CRM/Field Service platforms. You'll play a central role in our Elevate initiatives, guiding the migration from Vista by Viewpoint to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations while ensuring our Salesforce ecosystem-including CRM and Field Service-continues to evolve and deliver value. You'll also oversee integration work that connects these platforms, leveraging MuleSoft as McKinstry's primary integration and orchestration layer.
This is a high-impact opportunity for a strong people leader who is also deeply technical. Success requires proven management experience-coaching, mentoring, and growing engineers-combined with hands-on technical leadership across ERP, CRM, and integration domains. Working alongside our Business Technology team, you will help drive platform technical strategy, set technical standards, and collaborate across multiple teams during a period of significant transformation.
This role is based in Seattle, WA and operates on a hybrid work schedule.
What You'll Be Doing
Technical Contribution
  • Lead the technical design, extension, and support of McKinstry's ERP systems, guiding the team through the migration from Vista by Viewpoint to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations.
  • Oversee the Apex development and integrations of Salesforce platforms, including CRM and Field Service, ensuring solutions align with business needs and scalability goals.
  • Serve as a hands-on technical leader, contributing to architecture discussions, solution design reviews, and implementation decisions across ERP and Salesforce platforms.
  • Drive integration strategy and development connecting ERP, CRM, and other enterprise systems using MuleSoft as the primary orchestration platform.
  • Support data migration planning and execution as part of the ERP platform transition, ensuring data integrity and business continuity.
  • Ensure solutions are designed with scalability, performance, security, and reliability in mind-particularly where data supports analytics and AI-driven capabilities.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, backlog grooming, sprint planning, and cross-functional coordination activities.

Technical Leadership
  • Act as an enterprise systems subject matter expert for ERP and Salesforce platforms within McKinstry's technology organization.
  • Partner with Business Technology in guiding ERP customizations, Salesforce configurations (including Lightning, Apex, and Flows), and integrations are built, tested, and maintained.
  • Establish and refine standards, patterns, and best practices across ERP, Salesforce, and Integration workstreams.
  • Lead change management efforts related to platform transitions, helping teams adopt new tools, processes, and architectures.
  • Partner closely with leadership to inform decisions related to people, tools, processes, and platform roadmaps.
  • Introduce and promote best practices for API consumption, testing, monitoring, and observability (e.g., using tools such as Postman).
  • Establish and track metrics that ensure system stability, availability, and business value across all managed platforms.

People Management
  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers focused on ERP, Salesforce Apex, and integration development, while influencing contributors across adjacent teams.
  • Provide day-to-day technical direction, coaching, and feedback to team members working across multiple platforms and technologies.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, encouraging skill development in D365, Salesforce, MuleSoft, and modern engineering practices.
  • Communicate a clear platform vision and technical strategy across IT and business stakeholders.

Other duties as assigned.
What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 8 years of experience with increasing responsibility in information technology and application systems, including 5 years in software development and applications management.
  • Proven experience managing and leading software engineering teams supporting enterprise ERP and/or CRM platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of ERP systems, with direct experience in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, Vista by Viewpoint, or comparable platforms.
  • Solid experience with Salesforce, including CRM and Field Service; familiarity with Salesforce development (Lightning, Apex, Flows) is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with integration development using MuleSoft or comparable integration platforms (e.g., Dell Boomi, Informatica); MuleSoft experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of API-driven architectures, including REST APIs, connectors, endpoints, and orchestration patterns.
  • Experience leading platform migrations or large-scale enterprise system transitions, including data migration and change management.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and communication skills.
  • Ability to influence across teams and drive alignment on technical standards and approaches.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, Microsoft SQL Server, and Power BI preferred.
  • Exposure to data platforms, analytics, or AI-enabled systems preferred.
  • On-call availability 24 hours, 7 days a week.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regionally.
  • Provide personal transportation for meetings and job visits away from the office; reimbursed.
