Job description

Note: The location for this potential opportunity is in the West United States. Particularly in the states of CA, NV, WA, HI, CO, UT. OR, and AZ.
The Service Technician - Commercial Refrigeration performs service, preventive maintenance, and system inspections on supermarket refrigeration, walk-in coolers and freezers, display cases, and rack systems. Prior to working independently, technicians may work with experienced team members to gain proficiency in the company's standards, equipment, and processes. Ongoing training is available to support continued skill development and advancement within the trade.
This position requires technical proficiency, safe work practices, and adherence to union work rules while supporting high-quality project execution and customer satisfaction.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting on commercial refrigeration systems, including mechanical, electrical, and microprocessor-controlled components.
  • Execute routine preventive maintenance, leak detection, and system performance evaluations.
  • Deliver reliable, courteous, and professional service while interacting with customers and fellow union and non-union personnel on job sites.
  • Provide accurate service documentation, including detailed notes, photos, and materials used for all assigned work orders.
  • Follow all safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and union jobsite requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work vehicle and workspace.
  • Participate in rotating on-call schedules per union agreement.
  • Travel as required to job sites within the assigned service area.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the classification as assigned.

Union, Safety, and Compliance Responsibilities
  • Work in full compliance with:
    • Collective bargaining agreements
    • OSHA and applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations
    • Environmental and refrigerant-handling requirements
  • Maintain required licenses, certifications, and union training credentials (e.g., EPA 608, OSHA, safety certifications)
  • Demonstrate consistent use of required PPE and safe work practices on all jobsites

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • EPA 608 Certification - Universal
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of refrigeration principles.
  • Ability to read and follow detailed work instructions, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Excellent communication and customerâ€'service skills.
  • Strong timeâ€'management skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility to work variable shifts, overtime, weekends, and holidays based on union work rules and operational needs.
  • Valid state driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience working in commercial supermarket refrigeration, warehouse refrigeration, or large-scale cooling systems.
  • Knowledge of energyâ€'management and electronic control systems (Novar, CPC, Danfoss, etc.).
  • Familiarity with rack controllers, defrost systems, and advanced refrigeration diagnostics.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, push, pull, and lift components up to 75 lbs.
  • Work performed in environments with varying temperatures, moderate noise levels, and typical commercial/industrial shop or customerâ€'site conditions.
  • Must be able to safely operate tools, meters, ladders, and equipment required for refrigeration service work.
  • Work hours, overtime, and job assignments may be scheduled in accordance with union contract requirements.
