What is a client success manager?

A Client Success Manager (CSM) is a professional responsible for building strong relationships with clients to ensure they achieve their desired outcomes with a company's products or services. CSMs act as the main point of contact for clients, helping them navigate onboarding, addressing concerns, and identifying opportunities for growth. Their role focuses on maximizing client satisfaction, retention, and long-term value. CSMs often work closely with sales, support, and product teams to advocate for client needs and foster loyalty.

How does a client success manager typically collaborate with other departments to ensure client satisfaction?

Client Success Managers regularly work cross-functionally with teams such as Sales, Product, and Support to address client needs and proactively solve issues. For example, they may partner with Product to relay client feedback and prioritize feature requests, or coordinate with Support to resolve technical problems quickly. This collaborative approach ensures a seamless client experience and helps drive long-term retention. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are essential for success in this environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a client success manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Client Success Manager, you need a strong background in account management, relationship building, and customer service, often supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, customer support software, and data analytics tools is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help you proactively address client needs and foster long-term partnerships. These skills are essential for driving customer satisfaction, retention, and the overall growth of the business.

Duties

  • Serve as the primary relationship owner for an assigned portfolio of clients.
  • Establish a regular client meeting and communication cadence.
  • Develop a clear understanding of client objectives, stakeholders, programs, decision processes, and future needs.
  • Maintain visibility into expected demand, including timing, volume, program changes, and production requirements.
  • Communicate upcoming demand internally so DI Labs can prepare appropriate capacity, materials, staffing, technical support, and quality resources.
  • Lead consultative discovery and qualify opportunities using Sandler principles or another structured methodology.
  • Coordinate client opportunities and programs across engineering, quoting, customer service, quality, operations, and leadership.
  • Ensure meaningful opportunities have a clear objective, decision path, next action, owner, and date.

  • Maintain accurate client, opportunity, commitment, and next-action information in NetSuite.
  • Help strengthen and expand client relationships through trust, insight, and consistent follow-through.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Five or more years of experience in client-facing account management, program management, applications engineering, technical services, or complex project roles.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trusted client relationships.
  • Experience conducting consultative discovery and qualifying technical or commercial opportunities.
  • Ability to uncover the business impact, urgency, decision process, and expected investment behind client requests.
  • Experience coordinating work across engineering, manufacturing, quality, operations, sales, or customer service.
  • Strong communication, organization, judgment, and follow-through.
  • Ability to balance client needs with technical capability, capacity, quality, timing, risk, and profitability.
  • Experience using CRM, ERP, or workflow systems; NetSuite experience is preferred.
  • Experience in additive manufacturing, contract manufacturing, engineering services, product development, or another technical manufacturing environment is preferred.

Company Description

DI Labs is an advanced manufacturing technology company with a growing team of engineers, designers, technicians, and support professionals.

Our culture is driven by a concept we call Solutionology: the artful science of advanced problem-solving at the intersection of critical thinking and creative reasoning. It reflects our belief that there is always a solution—and that we do not rest until the problem is solved, often creating something that did not previously exist within the realm of possibility.

Every team member is a solutionologist. Regardless of role, each person is expected to be a problem-solver and thinker, not simply a doer. This creates a collaborative culture of ownership, accountability, curiosity and shared commitment to the results we deliver.
